Virus causes Obesity
The Hartford Courant ^ | April 1, 2003 | Staff Reporters

A study published in the highly respected New England Journal of Eternal Medicine due out today claims that obesity is caused by a virus.

The finding, if valid, directly contradicts the widely accepted theory that links obesity with lifestyle factors such as diet and lack of exercise.

Researchers said they were studying the relationship between a defective gene and binge eating when they stumbled upon the virus.

I thought eating causes obesity.

That's, like, sooo hatespeech. All personal problems are caused by something beyond the control of the victim.

I apparently caught some mild form of this virus when I turned 30.

Wow, a one-digit user ID.

Eric, that's gotta be valuable if you place it on eBay.

Come to think of it, DU has a whole lot of one-digit users, but it's not their IDs that we're talking about.

"Obesity is caused by sloth and glutton"

ACtually I have proof that thyroid problems, insulin problems, polycystic ovaries (all at the same time) can make you gain weight without overeating or eating improperly. I WISH I could have ate my way up the scale..at least i could have enjoyed myself. :) Or had a baby..SOMETHING! :) Of course, it only took about 5 weeks to gain my weight..it was quite alarming.

OR your metabolism could literally malfunction...and burn less calories than normal. See my previous post.

How old is he? If he's young and really as lazy as you claim, then he probably just has a fast metabolism. If this is true, as I suspect, then you can bet that when he's in his thirties he'll be fat if he continues to eat like a horse.

He's 41. He does not eat as much as he did when he was a kid but he still eats copious amounts. 4 or 5 meals plus snacks. I remember when we were 18 we were going to go drinking one night. He picks me up and wants to stop off at a pizza parlor before we start. I had eaten diner already and didn't want anything. He said he had diner also but didn't have enough. First off he has 3 slices of Sicilian pizza. Then he gets a couple of spinach rolls and finally moves on to a dozen zapolli. We went out from there and each had nine or ten beers. On the way home he stops off at a 7/11 for some Drakes cakes and crap to absorb some of the alcohol. True story. I think he's a freak of nature but I'm not sure.

The term "obese" has a specific meaning, and no person is "obese" that did not earn it. We're not talking about an extra 20 pounds here.

It is none of my business how much another weighs, nor do I care, my frustration is this politically correct theory that people are not responsible for their actions. It seems like there is a third party excuse for everything these days, and on this subject, look what has happened to America's children as a result.

I saw my grandfather eat himself to death, and have watched my father eat himself into the constant use of oxygen @ 55 and my sister...I have a very different body shape with very slight excercise and diet differences.

If politically correct fictional well wishing could cure the obesity epidemic, Richard Simmons would hold a Nobel prize. Like I said originally, the proof that I am wrong would be a starvation death of a 400 pound person.

I happen to find very curvy women extremely attractive, especially when their heads are screwwed on right. ; )

heh heh.. :) I feel the same way about guys...

I agree with you... 20-35#lb weight gain certainly isn't the same as someone who is 150+ lbs over weight. I guess I'm still sensitive about it. I definitely made an easy decision to not judge people who are overweight anymore. I often wonder, do they have a medical problem too? So many can suffer needlessly because doctors fail to take certain blood tests. On the other hand..some people sure do harm themselves..I really do feel sorry for them. I would have to guess that whatever hormone that's suppose to tell them their full, is in low supply. I'm very sorry to hear about your dad and grandfather.

Internal Medicine? I heard about this back in 1996 or earlier. There was someone at the U of WI at Madison exploring this idea.
