[history]
WASHINGTON-U.S. government officials have all but concluded that Saddam Hussein is in control of his military and issuing orders as he moves in and around Baghdad through a series of underground catacombs that lead from one bunker to the next.

This will come as a blow to anyone who really believed the CIA uses "earprint analysis." What a crock! I have no idea what techniques the CIA uses, but biometric analysis isn't inherently unbelievable.
That doesn't mean that that particular report was true -- plus, that report didn't even include any evidence that Saddam Hussein had been killed.
I still think that Hussein is alive, because of the political stability we're seeing in Iraq in spite of the great stress it is being subjected to, and because of the nature of the videotapes showing him.
I also think that there is no way of distinguishing between information and disinformation in this war, and I'm withholding judgment on the truth of virtually everything I hear, especially (but not solely) isolated, unsubstantiated reports.

Puhleeze, the earprint story had "bullsh*t propaganda" written all over it. So did the story about Saddam's mistress ID-ing the guy in the video as a double ("and she passed a lie detector test"). Pure horse puckey. The whole notion that we were in any doubt whether the guy in the video was a double or not was absurd. Saddam uses body doubles at some public events, for security purposes. He does not have doubles give televised speeches or TV interviews -- that would be as ridiculous as CBS having a Dan Rather double read the evening news. This is a guy who has been on TV before 18 million people every day for thirty years. They know what he looks like, they know what he sounds like. They were never in any doubt.

I tend to agree with your conclusion. I just don't think that biometric analyses ("earprints") are inherently unbelievable; I do think that the story as a whole was disinformation (or simply a "fog of war" error, perpetuated because it's exciting and sells newspapers).
There is so much disinformation in connection with the war that it's hard to tell the truth about anything. A high degree of skepticism is called for.

I hope he is in control, that way he will sacrifice all his troops before he leaves. He will leave nothing behind.
