U.S. hypocrisy will bring burdens to 'humanitarians'

Dear Editor,
The war the United States is currently waging against Iraq doesn't make sense.
The United States rose to power via the oppression and murder of innocent people and even if it is wrong that Iraq is trying to do the same thing, the United States is the metaphorical pot to Iraq's proverbial kettle.
Iraq can't have weapons of mass destruction, but the United States has weapons of mass destruction.
Iraq can't engage in "brutal tyranny," but the United States engaged in "brutal slavery" for 200 years, and no other countries came over here and tried to blow up Washington, D.C.
The United States is currently engaging in a war to defend itself from a "potential" threat. That's like saying "an eye for a possible eye, a tooth for a possible tooth." Sounds silly, doesn't it?
If someone is still able to justify the president's war and his propaganda-laden assertion that the war is about the liberation of the Iraqi people, consider this:
1. Freedom is not a gift that can be given. If the Iraqi people are powerless to free themselves from oppression without the assistance of the United States, the Iraqi people are dependent on the United States for their freedom and are therefore not free.
2. If the United States is in fact fighting this war to free the Iraqi people, that opens a Pandora's Box of U.S. responsibility. The U.S. armed forces becomes a global police force, defending oppressed people wherever they may be on the globe. And at $75 billion per campaign, that's a box we can't afford to open, even if it is the so-called "humanitarian" thing to do. This is especially so if we consider that we still don't have universal health care, pay equality, free education or reliable child care here in the United States.
With or without U.N. approval, the United States is making a big mistake by engaging in this war. Sadly, this is not the first time our Western arrogance will lead to innocent deaths, nor will it be the last.

1. Freedom is not a gift that can be given. "Freedom is not a gift that can be given"? Tell that to the South Koreans, East Germans, our own African-American population, the Kuwaitis.

Every sentence here is asinine and easily refuted. I'll just take this one:

I think this pea-brain is saying that the American Civil War was a mistake. That freedom for the slaves was not something that the North could give them. It would have been better has the abolitionists just shut up and allowed the blacks to remain slaves. And they should have remained slaves until they took it upon themselves to stage a massive, bloody slave revolt.
Since they did not free themselves, Blacks in America are not free.

Im a recent graduate from a "liberal" university, and John Johnson's comments are not surprising to me. Just typical regurgitation with no real thought to what is coming out, but i can guarantee that its mostly beer and bong water.

you forget maybe that after the civil war most if not all slaves were freed, a good many men fought in that war to free them even if all did not. Our military has been acting as a global police force ever since world war one when we went against the last advice president george washington gave his country, "Stay out of the affairs of other nations, no good will come of it" As far as weapons of mass destruction, yes we have them as well as most other countries in the world that have so far proven themselves responsible enough not to use them. We're disarming a fanatical regime, not a responsible nation. And freedom can be given, we gave it to the taiwanese yeah they're dependant on us but who in this world isnt?? Please kill yourself and your family so your views dont poison the rest of our population.

Could you clarify? I might agree with you if your point is that blacks in the US are enslaved to the Democrats who constantly try to "help" them. And they are enslaved to shysters like Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson. If on the other hand, you feel that blacks in the US are oppressed by racist Whites, then I would disagree.

I have to say, I am disappointed in my Alma Mater lately. I have known great conservative leaders who have come from Ball State and I am a bit saddened to see that those who are there now pay no attention to the facts and are using false arguements to make the US sound like monsters. What kind of education are students receiving from these uber-liberal professors and graduate students?
I am deeply disturbed by professors and students who write biased dribble. I would like to remind those who are still attending this University, that you have the ability to make up your own minds, liberal loudmouths don't rule the roost.

It is time to start thinking of an imperial America. The rest of the world cannot govern itself without tyranny or genocide. I hope this dolt can get the money he spent on his 'education' back Nope, he got exactly what he paid for and he obviously absorbed it well. I would agree that perhaps his parents should get their money back but he probably survived on government grants and student loans he never intends to repay. He also probably never intends to leave academia or government "service" so he was well prepared. As far as the future of the country, now that is another story.
