US Ambassador walks out of UN debate on Iraq war
Jerusalem Post ^ | Mar. 27, 2003

The US ambassador to the United Nations walked out of a debate on the Iraqi war Thursday after Iraq's ambassador accused the United States of trying to exterminate the Iraqi people.

"I did sit through quite a long part of what he had to say but I'd heard enough," US Ambassador John Negroponte said.

Iraq's UN envoy Mohammed Al-Douri charged that the United States had arranged for contracts to rebuild Iraq in 1997, six years before the US-led war began last week.

Negroponte got up and walked out as Al-Douri continued speaking, accusing the United States of a military campaign to wipe out the Iraqi people. "I don't accept any of the allegations," Negroponte said.

Al-Douri said the United States had even planned the carving up of Iraq before Iraq invaded Kuwait in 1990.

Almost spluttering, he said the United States now was using the issue of humanitarian aid to hide its "criminal aggression."

The Iraqi envoy urged the Security Council to halt the war in Iraq, saying ending the conflict was even more important than getting humanitarian assistance into the region.

Al-Douri was the last of more than 80 speakers at the first open Security Council debate on Iraq since the war began last week. About a dozen countries that are not on the council supported the US position, but the vast majority opposed the war and expressed regret that Iraq's disarmament could not be achieved peacefully.

"Britain and the United States are about to start a real war of extermination that will kill everything and destroy everything," Al-Douri warned. "And then their regret will be of no use."

"If the humanitarian issue is very important, it is more important" to halt the war, he said.

Is this the body Bush and Blair want resolutions passed after we take down Iraq?

Comeon. We need to walk out of the UN as a whole.

If Rudy Giuliani was still mayor he would have thrown Al-Douri out fo the city or had him deported.

Negroponte gets my vote for the Nobel Peace Prize (oops, forgot for a moment that only pointy-headed liberals get to vote).

After Soviet ambassador to the U.N. Malik staged a walkout, the Security Council was able to vote sending military forces to the Korean War without being blocked by a Soviet veto.

This really isn't all that surprising (the commentary of the Iraqi representative that is). It's sad that they are trying to make such accusations in order to stop the just removal of a horrid dictator.

I congratulate our representative on being a better man than I. I would have come over the table were I in his position.

True, but without the Americans who would they send? One hears a lot of talk, but I see no other nations ready to stand shoulder to shoulder with the Iraqis on the battlefield.

I imagine the reprobates at DU believe every single lie that Al-Douri is spewing. I imagine the Hollywood libs believe them as well. Which proves that they are as corrupt and evil as Saddam and his thugs. Anyone who takes the side of criminals is a criminal as well.

Negroponte should have smacked Al-Douri over the head with his shoe.

The United States of America is at war with Iraq. Our government considers the regime in Iraq to be an outlaw regime. Iraq's UN ambassador should be warned to leave the United States immediately or be arrested as a prisoner of war if he refuses to leave. The U.S. should stop allowing any legitimacy or respect be given to anyone representing the current regime in Iraq.

I'd pay to see that :-)

Don't hold your breath. After watching Bush and Blair this morning, I have no hope that we are done with the U.N. I thought Bush was actually fed up with them. But it doesn't look like it.

There's a real simple solution......the "current regime" needs to concede.

But I guess that's too obvious here.
