ANC Shocked At Baghdad Bombing

Parliament -- The African National Congress on Wednesday expressed its "shock and dismay at the deaths of scores of innocent civilians" in a Baghdad market place as a result of coalition bombardment.

"This senseless act of cruel violence will only convince us, and all the people of South Africa, that the current aggression by the United States and Britain against the government and people of Iraq is both undesirable and counter to the goals of democracy and peace," the ANC said in a statement.

Earlier on Wednesday, the ANC secretary general Kgalema Motlanthe sent a message to Iraqi Deputy Prime Minister Tariq Aziz, assuring Iraqis, at this moment of extreme danger for them, of the continued support of the ANC "for all efforts to end the unilateral aggression of the United States and other countries".

The ANC remained committed to the peaceful resolution of international disputes and conflicts, to the maintenance of respect for international law, and for the need to ensure institutions such as the United Nations were "truly capable of reflecting, and acting on the wishes of the nations of the world", he said.

"We are acutely aware of the humanitarian crisis which these actions will precipitate and the responsibility of all nations to provide whatever assistance possible to the people of Iraq.

"The people of South Africa, together with the majority of nations and peoples of the world, will continue to campaign, even in the face of the US-led invasion, for a peaceful resolution," Motlanthe said.

In its statement, the ANC again called on "the aggressors to immediately withdraw their forces from Iraq", and allow the people of that country to determine their own destiny without the interference of foreign military powers.

this from a country where the white population is forced to have landmines in their front yards because the govenemtn refuses to provide any semblance of protection or punishment of/from home invaders.

This from a country that deals with its political enemies by placing kerosene-soaked tires around their bodies and striking a match.

I might could feel some sympathy, but since Saddam insists on placing AAA, SAM's and other military equipment and personnel in and around civilian areas, I am surprised that there have not been far more civilian deaths.

The US is doing an amazing job of keeping civilian casualties to a minimum. IF we were the monsters that the world media, particularly those of the Muslim and/or African persuasion we would be carpet bombing Iraq and Nasaryia (sp?) But no, we are trying our best to minimize civilian casualties - probably at the cost of many US/Allied lives.

Maybe we should have used machetes? Could they relate better if we do? I know they did a bang up job in Rwanda and elsewhere in Africa without dropping a single bomb.

Well that's the thing is'nt it? How about the Soviets - a few complaints here and there, but not too much because everybody knew they would do it anyway. I hate to say it but we are just too damned soft! we lose respect when we waffle, many third worlders hold us in contempt because they perceive us to be weak. We actually encourage our enemies and increase our chance of taking casualities.

ANC is shocked at the devastation caused by Iraq's own AAA weapons, especially shocked that there is any fighting at all since the regular army has stood down and only the Republican Guard and various Uday [sp?] irregulars still attempt a resistance.

South Africa used to be a real country once, with an economy and everything.

And Cincinnati, San Franciso and even Detroit used to be really nice cities. Ah, but I'm aging myself...

A "score" is 20. They need to learn what words mean before they use them. Even the Iraqis aren't claiming that 20 were killed.

The ANC is the group, now running S. Africa, that used to regularly kill scores of innocents by the quaint use of the necklace--putting a rubber auto tire filled with gasoline around the head of the victim and then setting it afire.

We should brook no hypocrisy from these terrorists.
