Manager: No More Apologies From Dixie Chicks
Fallout Continues From Controversial Bush Comment
POSTED: 9:39 a.m. EST March 26, 2003
The manager of the Dixie Chicks says singer Natalie Maines is through with her apologies for a controversial comment she made in a London concert about President George W. Bush.
Texas-native Maines (pictured, far right) told the audience earlier this month, "Just so you know, we're ashamed the president of the United States is from Texas."
Simon Renshaw told the trade paper Radio and Records that Maines has already issued two strongly worded statements for making the comments, and right now, he doesn't think that "Natalie can win."
Maines posted an apology on the group's Web site March 14, saying she was disrespectful to Bush, and anyone who holds the presidency should be treated with the utmost respect.
She also said she was a proud American, and expressed that she wanted to see all other options exhausted before the lives of Iraqi children and American soldiers are lost in an attack.

Since the comment, several radio stations across the United States have boycotted the Chicks' music, some have held fan rallies to destroy the group's CDs and merchandise, and fellow country artists like Travis Tritt have gone on the record against them.
When the Chicks return to the United States in May, it sounds as though Maines won't be making any public apologies at the group's concerts, either.
"If she goes on the microphone and apologizes, they'll say she doesn't sound contrite enough," Renshaw told Radio and Records.
Maines' first public test of resilience will come May 1 when the group opens its North American tour leg in South Carolina. The state House in South Carolina recently passed a resolution requesting that the Dixie Chicks apologize directly to South Carolinians. The resolution also requests that the trio play a free concert for troops and military families in the state.
In the meantime, Greenville, S.C., radio host Mike Gallagher said he's "75 percent of the way there" in booking Charlie Daniels to perform in an alternative concert to the Chicks' performance May 1, according to Radio and Records.
Gallagher has a wish list of other big-name performers for the alternative concert, including Tritt and Toby Keith. If the concert flies, Gallagher said all of the proceeds will help provide food and personal care items to the families of military personnel.
In addition, Gallagher is holding a block of free VIP seats and a backstage reception for Dixie Chicks ticket-holders, because he says the Chicks' promoters are not offering refunds.
Reacting to Gallagher's plans, Renshaw said, "It will be fantastic to see who he gets to play. If he thinks there should be a counter-show, I wish him good luck."
Through all the controversy, at least one high-profile celebrity is speaking out in the Dixie Chicks' defense. In his controversial speech shaming Bush at the Oscars Sunday night, documentary filmmaker Michael Moore said, "Any time you have the pope and the Dixie Chicks against you, your time is up!"

The Chicks will star in a Lipton Iced Tea television commercial spot starting in mid-May and be featured in store displays promoting Lipton Tea's national contest where consumers check inside their package of Lipton Tea for chance to win a VIP event with the Chicks as well as Chicks CDs, tour jackets and t-shirts. Lipton Iced Tea and Lipton Tea products will be sampled at all the U.S. Dixie Chicks dates.

Once heard the "Chicks" when they performed as an opening act for a concert in Dallas. Didn't think much of them then, know that they're a disgrace now. I guess I'll never know what they sound like ---I haven't heard any of their songs as far as I know ---glad I'm not missing much.

I'm not going there, but I think another sight is reverse "freeping" and gaining ground... If they are, they're not doing a very good job. The pecentages are exactly the same as they were 2 1/2 hours ago.

Dixie Chicks - A Soldiers Remarks
May she also have the freedom to look for a new career.
Letter from radio station website in Lubbock, home of the Dixie Chick that
spewed forth about our president:
Name: LT Layne McDowell
Date: 03/15/03
Time: 01:54:49 PM
Comment
An open letter to the Dixie Chicks: Earlier this week, while performing in
London, you stated that you were ashamed that our President is from your
home state. I wonder if you realized how many Americans would be listening.
This American was listening. This Texan is ashamed that you come from my
state. I serve my country as an officer in the United States Navy.
Specifically, I fly F-14 Tomcats off carriers around the world, executing
the missions that preserve the very freedom you claim to exercise. I have
proudly fought for my country in the skies over Kosovo, Iraq and
Afghanistan without regret. Though I may disagree wholeheartedly with your
comments, I will defend to the death your right to say them, in America.
But for you to travel to a foreign land and publicly criticize our
Commander in Chief is cowardice behavior. Would you have so willingly made
those comments while performing for a patriotic, flag-waving crowd of
Texans in Lubbock. I would imagine not. How dare you pocket profits off
songs about soldiers, their deaths and patriotism while criticizing their
Commander in Chief abroad, even while they prepare to give their lives to
ensure your own freedom of speech. Please ask yourself, what have you done
to deserve that sacrifice? Do not try to justify your comments by claiming
that you made them only because you care about innocent lives. Never once
in our history have we committed troops to war for the purpose of taking
innocent lives. We do it to protect innocent lives, even yours. If the
world leaders of the late 1930's had the vision and courage of our present
Commander in Chief, perhaps the evil men who caused the death of millions
in WWII would have never had the opportunity to harm a soul. The potential
loss of millions of lives in the future at the hands of today's evil men
necessitate action. In a separate correspondence, I am returning to you
each and every Dixie Chicks CD and cassette that I have ever purchased.
Never again will I allow my funds to support your behavior. All you have
done is to add your name to a growing list of American "Celebrities" who
have failed to realize that they have obtained their successes on the backs
of the American blue-collar workers such as our servicemen and women. To
Natalie Maines: This Texan (?) this American will continue to risk his life to
guarantee your freedoms. What will you do to deserve it?

The other two Chicks' main motivation has been to see young kids pick up an instrument. They have been an inspiration to a lot of children. Natalie, on the other hand, has always just wanted to be a star. She should've quantified her aspiration a bit without getting cozy with Sheryl Crowe and stepping on the flag.
It's a real shame Natalie could not keep her piehole shut. We weren't buying their political views, we were purchasing albumns which featured some top-notch, updated bluegrass. For political views we can purchase a subscription of National Review. We would not buy a copy of 'Home'.

Ricky Skaggs - blue grass - yahoo!!!! My husband and I attended his concert in Hanford CA a week or so ago and it was spectacular. The guy is a genius and his band is miraculous. It was glorious. In addition, Ricky Skaggs made patriotic comments in support of our President and our troops. Yahoo! For victory & freedom!!!

Time for Natalie to do a PLAYBOY shoot. That should win back some of them rednecks! YEE~HAW!Unfortunately, Playboy publishes in a standard 8 1/2 x 11 format. You'd need a magazine of at least Rolling Stone width to fit Natalie in.

So, the Dixie Chicks were hanging around with the democraps in the California Legislature. Now this all makes sense.

They should just fire her and replace her with someone else. Imagine the two of them with, say, Shania Twain. That'd be a money-making bonanza supergroup.
