Didn't the New York Times tell us this morning that the inhabitants of Basra loved Saddam? Why, yes, they did. In fact they gave reasons why a popular uprising in Basra could NOT be hoped for.

But why aren't they welcoming us with a parade? Hopefully this will shut the newsies defeatest attitudes up for a while.

Uprising By Shiites in Basra Underway;
British Pouring Artillery into City Just monitored on Sky News: embedded reporter says Shiites in Basra have begun, in his words, a "popular uprising" against the Saddam forces still in the city. British Army units are "pouring" artillery into the city (likely isolated areas) preparing to move in.
FOX News is confirming/breaking this news from Sky News . . .

First we surround the city with troops, then we let the inhabitants in the city know that we are there and now would be a great time to attack the Republican Guard without them being able to flee. Excellent tactics.

I'm confused - what exactly are the British doing and to whom are they doing it?
To: TonyInOhio
We cannot let them down this time, like we did in 1991.
Save them.

Maybe (just maybe, now) this will encourage Iran to stand back - of course, this could encourage them to wedge their shoulder in.
In the longer term (real wishful thinking now on my part), this will encourage Iran to stand down from their axis of evil stance. E.g., encourage moderate Shias in Iran that maybe democracy ain't so bad after all....

I hope this puts an end to the cries of "MOAB all Iraqis" every time a Saddamist thug inflicts any damage on Allied forces.

Shiites in Basra have begun, in his words, a "popular uprising" against the Saddam forces still in the city. IT ABOUT TIME!
We've been doing fly overs to protect the southern Shiites for 12 years!
I thought it odd they'd not help us take out the guy to killed thousands of them. (I think it was chemical?)
