Just monitored on Sky News: embedded reporter says Shiites in Basra have begun, in his words, a "popular uprising" against the Saddam forces still in the city. British Army units are "pouring" artillery into the city (likely isolated areas) preparing to move in.

I hope we find out 20 to 30 years from now during a National Geographic Special "The Hunt For Saddam's EXTRA-Secret Bunker" that he and a select few of his inner circle got to slowly starve to death or be slowly asphyxiated during their last days in a blockaded, but undiscovered bunker.
