The Crime of '73 refers to the passage of the Coinage Act of 1873, demonetizing silver. This was motivated by gold producers and other special interests who feared the potentially inflationary effects of injection of large amounts of silver specie into the money supply.

This may have been a key factor in the deflationary depression lasting from 1873 to 1896.
