DETROIT-- Detroit police reportedly arrested and then released four men near the Detroit Water and Sewerage Plant Tuesday morning.
The men were arrested around 3 a.m. near a plant intake facility near Dearborn and West Jefferson Avenue along the Detroit River in southwest Detroit, Local 4 reported. Several manhole covers in the area were reportedly removed and the men were found with a laptop computer and binoculars.
Federal authorities and Detroit police questioned the men. The suspects were released, but authorities kept their computer to investigate, according to the station's reports.
City of Detroit security and officers from the Detroit Police Department's 4th Precinct reportedly patrol the area. The Detroit Water and Sewerage Department supplies water to the city of Detroit and several suburbs in the metro area, the station reported.

The facts as related sound suspicious enough that I'm wondering why on earth they were released.

Couldn't they have at least held these guys long enough to search the contents of their laptop and vehicle, not to mention searching the area for sabotage?

i agree with heartlander-- manhole covers removed in the dead of night, by men with laptops? what more do we need to find these men suspicious, short of photographs of them having a beer with Osama bin Laden. I worry that the politically correct climate of this country is what makes authorities hesitant to detain men like this, for fear of "racial profiling" accusations.

So...WHY WERE THEY RELEASED???
This sounds very suspicious to me. I mean, who sits around a manhole with a laptop computer and binoculars at 3 am in the morning anyway? And, near a water plant to boot. Hummmm.

What the $%^#...? The police can hold dog gone near anybody for 24 hrs
I would think attempted theft of manhole covers would be a good place to start !!!

Following them home has proven to be useful.
In the early days of terrorism, it was the water supply that interested and frightened me most, rather than antrhax and smallpox. You can make a lot of poison easily on a petri dish and terrify a lot of people (though not kill many) if you can just get that poison into a significant water source. Say, on Sunday night in prep for Monday morning coffee.

Laptops in sewers? What good would that be? DId they have a diagram or map on these? If so why not print it out and why take your laptop to the sewers??? These facts do not add up to terrorists but something probably regarding pornography and the use of sewers as hiding/rendevous places of some kind.

Well at least this in an improvement. They were arrested and the cops KEPT the laptop. There was a time when suspicious people doing surveillance on buildings and infrastrucure would be ignored with an explanation that they were tourists.
