Tom Brokow scolds those who question illegal immigrants who become dead U.S. Marines
NBC News | 3-24-03 | eBay Artist

NBC News ran a background story about Jose Guiterrez, killed U.S. Marine. He came to the country illegally from Guatemala in a freight train. Lived in a foster home, became a U.S. Marine and died in the last few days in Iraq. Brokow follows up with: "Think about that before you rail against illegal immigrants again!"

Brokaw is exactly correct.

Gutierrez came to this country at age 16 without knowing a word of English, quickly learned English, and enlisted in the Marines. And don't throw out crap about him just wanting a free education, there are far easier ways to do that than the Marines. In fact he told his American surrogate family that the reason he joined the Marines was because he wanted to give back to America since America had given him everything. He paid the ultimate sacrifice with his life.

But this calls out the lies of so many stereotypes thrown out by those who hate illegal immigrants. There are plenty of problems with illegal immigration that needs to be addressed ASAP, but that doesn't mean we need to slander a whole group just to sell one's viewpoints. I shudder to think what would have been said about killed Black soldiers if Free Republic had been around during WWII.

Gutierrez is a hero.

If he was only 16 when he came, maybe he was adopted by an American and did become a citizen, so it's unfair for the news to imply he was still an illegal if he wasn't, and it's gruesome for them to use his tragic death for some other agenda they wish to push.

There are good illegals, there are bad citizens, but that's not the point. The key word is "illegal".

What an old liberal idiot. Thank God they are dying out. Enjoy Brokaw as you would the mermaid hoax at the Ripley's museum in SF: Its disguting, dryed out, and a curiosity which bookmarks an era in American history when many people were ignorant.

Jose Gutierrez came from Guatemala. I lived in San Francisco during the time when there was a huge flight from Guatemala, basically from the communists in Guatemala, to the US.

Guatemalans made great citizens. Many of them could not be legalized for political reasons, and had to wait around until they could win a lottery or get an amnesty or some such thing.

This guy died for our (and his) country. Shut your mouths if you had anything but good to say for him. Shut your mouths and offer up a prayer to God for him and his family.

Actually this thread is quite illustrative that ignorance is alive and thriving in some elements of America...

No he didnt, I'm a current Marine and I know lots of us who dont have greencards, They're in some special status as soon as their enlistment is over, they and their immediate family gets citizanship (sp?) or something like that.
It's sad that immigrants feel more for america than all those peaceniks. One man had more patriotism then any of those anti-war pu$$ies and I'll stand by that till the day I die.

It's bad enough that the news anchor throws in an agenda item of the left, but he also transparently phrases it in the imperative tense, essentially becoming a little media Stalin to the millions of TV peasants: "You! Think about that...!"

Brokaw is a prejudiced jerk. How dare he call this brave young hero an "illegal immigrant" - the man was an American patriot. He deserves that kind of recognition for his sacrifice - not to be used by Brokaw to sneer at Americans who want to secure our borders in these troubled times.

All illegal aliens are lawbreakers and I like to slander lawbreakers. I admire the fact that Gutierrez sacrificed his life in fighting for the U.S., but what he did was a rare exception to the rule among illegal aliens in the U.S.
