I thought he wasn't a member of the 101st, but was with an Army engineering unit attached to the 101st. His educational background and his going into the Army as an enlisted man whispers "sleeper" to me.

That was my first reaction when I heard about it, but after checking I found out that he was not in a "Major Unit". According to their website, this guy was under one of the "Separate Division Units" (326th Engineering Battalion) that provides engineering support for the 101st. It is possible, given the double degree, that those degrees may have given him a big edge on getting into the 101st when he enlisted. But being in the Govt. contracting business myself, I do have to ask the same question others have on here about why this guy enlisted when he could have made big bucks in the contracting arena.

The ACLU published a paperback specifically designed to "work around" the UCMJ.
I have read it, and if the ACLU chooses to represent him, they *could* get this traitor off the hook via a slew of "emotional stress" technicalities.
Will they do it?
The odds are in his favor, considering the kinds of "cases" they like.
Given that his "emotional state"/race/religion is already being bandied about as an excuse, I don't hold much hope of true military justice being meted out.

Well, perhaps. I'm guessing it wouldn't amount to much if they kept this guy under the control of the field command, and out of the country. As others have said, however, that's not likely to happen.

Yes. According to one of his former Army superiors, John Muhammad also tried a similar stunt with a grenade that didn't explode during Gulf War I. It's not reflected on his Army service record, though, so I guess it was just a little joke. (/sarcasm)

I have heard many times that he recently converted to
Islam. Now his mother is saying that he was not allowed to participate in the 1st Gulf War because of his muslim religion. Something wrong here. Also I would like to know whether his religion is the Black Muslim religion (all bad) or Islam (mostly bad) and the rationale for giving this baby the middle name, "Fidel".

Would this story be just as insignificant to the media if the sleeper had been blond hair/blue eyed like Timothy McVeigh?
