Dan Rather went on a special live edition of
the Letterman Show to respond to questions
that Saddam had been killed in US air attacks
and a double was on Iraqi TV:
"Dave, I know Saddam and know him as well as a heffer knows her calf. I've been as close to Saddam's ass as that calf to his momma's teat. So I can say with the certainty of a Christian hold four aces and a .45 that the Saddam on Iraqi TV this morning is the without doubt the Saddam I have known and loved all these years!"

It did seem like a tape, but, a while ago a Fox reporter commented that Saddam hates to wear his glasses in public (makes him look weak) and he was wearing his glasses for this speech which made the Fox reported assume it was a "last minute speech".
During Saddam's speech last night we could hear gunshots in the background, but not distant background. More than one shot. My husband and I figured he must have another execution squad working, if it was a pre-recorded tape. Anyone else notice the gunshots?

I hope you are right and I am wrong. I had not seen the report about the van. I assume we have people in Baghdad that can check the attack site and can report in as to what happened. I don't know of any reason why we wouldn't make it known that Saddam is dead as soon as we confirm it--what a coup that would be!

It occurs to me that we haven't used emp bombs yet because we want to hear what they are saying.

Why don't they ask Dan Rather? He just spent a couple of hours with the guy, and Saddam would have no reason to let a double give a long and complex interview to a major journalist -- the doubles don't have enough freedom of action to ad-lib answers.

DID anyone else notice that his speech didn't match his mouthing of words in time -

- IOW, the timing was off between the tape's audio and video tracks ... virtually impossible today with today's video gear UNLESS separate video and audio paths were used en route to the TV transmitter or ?????

Well, if it was indeed an alive Saddam, he sure looked like death warmed over. Me thinks that the Republican Guard will be scouring the black market for any and all tubes of Grecian Formula. I will bet that the hair on the head of Saddam will turn greyer than the locks of Osama Bin Laden did before the Tora Bora bombing if this keeps up. (Hey, we have not even gotten to the vaunted Shock & Awe phase, yet.)

Anyone who thinks the tape isn't Sadman because of double chins or anything else should look at the front page of the Wall Street Journal from Weenesday. Except for the glasses, it looks the same...double chin, uniform, ascot, etc. I was doubtful at first until I picked up yesterday's WSJ this morning.

Still think it may have been prerecorded though.

Last night I was sitting a favorite nite spot having beer. They had on CNN and the 'Saddam broadcast.' Next to me was a jerk trying to make time with his date. He spouted off to the effect: "Why do we need to kill that old man" ... And then said, "Bush is a war criminal ... "

I turned to him and said quite loudly ... "Because he is the Butcher of Bagdad ... he is tyrant and a murderer and is giving WMD to terrorists. France, Germany, Russia and China are just pissed off because they have delivered billions of dollars in miliarty equipment and WMD technology in violation of the world trade embargo ... Be glad you live in America, because in Iraq you would be hauled off and shot in the head just for making that comment ..."

He just clammed up and then got up and quietly left. The girl was nodding her head in agreement with me with a huge smile on her face.

America is filled with idiots and subversive types. Young people attending college were packed into the place watching Saddam. They all shut up with their 'I hate America' crapola.

The chin on the latest broadcast yesterday night was smaller, MUCH smaller then the real Saddam. AND nose was smaller, and eyebrows looked faked bigtime. NO WAY WAS THAT real Saddam! One t.v. station showed each picture side by side, and the differences just jumped out!
