San Antonio DJ Pulls The Plug On The Dixie Chicks

A popular country music group has some San Antonians turning off their radios. A KJ 97 DJ pulled the plug on the trio's songs after lead singer Natalie Maines made a negative comment about President Bush.

The trio is on tour overseas, but they're causing quite a stir back here at home.

"Natalie Maines before a concert audience in London, England said, and I quote, ‘Just so you know, we're ashamed the President of the United States is from Texas,’" said Keith Montgomery with KJ 97.

The comments prompted Montgomery to pull the Chicks music off the air Thursday

"I would say the reaction is 99 percent in favor of what I have done," said Montgomery.

Texans aren't the only ones upset about Maine's comments. Reaction from all over the country caused the group on Thursday to post an explanation of their stance. The group released a statement Thursday saying they have been overseas for several weeks and "the anti-American sentiment that has unfolded here is astounding. While we support our troops, there is nothing more frightening than the notion of going to war with Iraq and the prospect of all the innocent lives that will be lost."

In a separate statement Thursday, Maines said, "I feel the president is ignoring the opinion of many in the U.S. and alienating the rest of the world. My comments were made in frustration, and one of the privileges of being an American is you are free to voice your own point of view."

But in the process of putting their opinion out there, they're losing support. Angry phone calls flooded radio stations across the country Thursday, calling for a boycott of the Texas trio's music.

The Dixie Chicks will kick off a U.S. tour in support of their multi-platinum album "Home" on May 1 in Greenville, South Carolina. The group's hits include "Wide Open Spaces," "Ready to Run" and "Landslide." The Dixie Chicks are coming to San Antonio in July.

Montgomery says, after hearing from more listeners, he'll decide on Friday whether to play their music on his show.

But I was serious about the German tour.

Man those loud mouth idiots have really stirred things up in Kansas City! ALL the country radio stations pulled their anti-american propaganda AKA 'songs' from the airwaves this morning! One station even had a Dixie Chicken Toss I think it had something to do with bringing your Dixie Chicks CD down to the station and throwing them into a big dumpster!

The Dixie Dogs have a sold-out concert here next month. That should be...interesting!

I think it'd be great if the venues are packed with people who already bought their tickets, and who, when the Chicks start their set, promptly boo them off the stage.

I am new here to this forum and when I read your response to the Dixie Chicks stupid comment, I was happy to have found a great place to read a brilliant imaginative comment by you.
I wish there was some way they could read your words so they could ponder on the imagerey of themselves experiencing this horrible terrorist attack.

Celebrities are getting dummer and dummest...except lonely Dennis Miller.

Thanks for reminding us about the David Worley song, ''Forgotten''. It does help us to remember that horrible day. Maybe the Dixie Chicks need to hear this song 24/7 for a week for their punishment.

One of the privileges of being an american is we are free to boycott their awful twangy music if we don't share their views.

Liberals everywhere are learning the hard way to keep their damn mouths shut. Nobody cares to hear this nonsense anymore, not in the USA.

A country station in Texarkana also pulled their music, and the DJ was happy to explain why to anyone who asked.

WCMS, Norfolk's premier country radio station has also gone chickless.

Whereas we support Natalie's freedom of speech rights, we feel we're supporting our free speech rights by not playing her music, said WCMS Program Director Jack Prater. We live in the world's largest Navy town and we respect the fact that they're in harm's way.

as someone said on an earlier thread: these people forget they are "entertainers"....we don't pay them to do anything but entertain us at our leisure....they should pay more attention to the organ grinder and not run around and tip their cap and wave their cup so much.

The infinity station in Seattle KMPS just sent me a letter that I saw posted briefly on the Kansas City KFKF web site. The letter is gone now...but the two letters were verbatim except changing the call letters.

It talks about how they agree with the outrage, but believe more in the constitution. And that we're free to boycott them.

Consider it tuned in long enough to collect a sponsor list...then my boycott starts.
