Steve Kaufman worries about more than typical war stories. He's patriotically eager albeit realistically anxious to go to war. It's the other stories -- the ones following the Gulf War, about self-employed reservists returning home to face bankruptcy -- that linger in his mind.

There is just a tremendous number of public relations executives who are out of work these days ... it should not be hard for someone like this to find a temporary principal to run his business while he's on duty.
I do think that it might be worth amending the Soldiers and Sailors Relief Act such that repossessions and involuntary bankruptcies of businesses majority-owned by activated reservists and guardsmen would be protected.

It's the other stories -- the ones following the Gulf War, about self-employed reservists returning home to face bankruptcy My father was the owner of a 4-chair barbershop in 1944, when he was drafted. Of course his shop went out of business. After the war he never did get beyond running a one-chair shop. Recovery from that interruption was not possible. However, he didn't go through bankruptcy, just sold his holdings. I can sympathize with self-employed people who get called up.
