Faith Hill, Toby Keith and Shania Twain have each received five nominations to emerge as frontrunners at the CMT Flameworthy 2003 Video Music Awards. Deana Carter, Rascal Flatts and Blake Shelton announced the finalists during a Tuesday morning (March 11) press conference at Nashville's Gaylord Entertainment Center.

I have not listened to her cd, nor do I think she is anti-male. It is just her "Forgive" song that tends to be the quintessential "chick" song that most men tend to run away from. I wish she would have debuted with some of the other songs you listed, because that song and that gloating video made a bad first impression on me.

Similarly, I don't think Martina McBride is anti-male, it's just a lot of her recent songs have had hints of male-bashing, "I don't need a man so nyah"-type lyrics. If it gets some feminists to start listening to country music, it's all good. Then we can start subliminating them with other good country qualities: hard work, family values, and faith (not Hill).

Like you, I wish there were more singers in the mainstream who profess their faith (like Sara Evans and Collin Raye). I may download RLH's "Daddy, Jesus, and You" today to see if I like it (I like the title). If so, I might check out the CD. She has a strong voice (first time I heard it, I thought it was Martina), but a song making guys feel like dirt......ugh.

Country radio is programmed to appeal to adult females. That's the reason you'll find the "male bashing/girl power" songs. That's also why you find so many "pretty boy" acts showing up (Keith Urban, Rascal Flatts, ect...). At least country's pretty boys, most of them anyway, have some talent.

I've also found that, no matter what the message of the music may be, country women are 90% pro-family, pro-life, patriotic, and conservative. (A non-scientific phone-in poll conducted on air during the 2000 presidential election had Bush out polling Gore 9 to 1). Country listeners get it.

I hope you download "Daddy, Jesus, and You". I'm sure you'll like it. I think it's on her self-titled debut cd. Also I thought "Forgive" was an awesome song...and I'm a guy :-)

That leaves Martina McBride (she of "Independence Day" fame). She's the best of the lot anyway.

I agree with you 110%!!! Martina is my favorite female country singer! I love her new song "Concrete Angel". I cried the first time I heard it. My favorite song by her though is "A Broken Wing".

Similarly, I don't think Martina McBride is anti-male, it's just a lot of her recent songs have had hints of male-bashing, "I don't need a man so nyah"-type lyrics.

Are we listening to the same Martina? "I am Blessed" dealt with how lucky she is for having her family, and how much she loves them. "Where Would you Be" is about her love for a man who doesn't seem to appreciate her (which isn't necessarily male-bashing). And "Concrete Angel" is about a battered child...I don't believe that the parent's sex is mentioned in the song (but I THINK the video shows the abuser as the mother). "There You Are" and "Valentine" are beautiful love songs. I'm just curious as to which songs you are referring...maybe there's some out there I'm not aware of.

Talking about male-bashers....Shania Twain has that title LOCKED. "Any Man of Mine"...."Honey I'm Home"..."That Don't Impress Me Much"....the list goes on and on. Needless to say, I am in NO WAY a Shania fan. She can't sing...and she wouldn't be so famous if she didn't look/dress like a sl*t.

It's My Time (Insensitive husband)
Love's the Only House (Don Juan abandoning his pregnant girlfriend)
Broken Wing (Insensitive husband)
Whatever You Say (You don't listen)
Independence Day (Abusive father)

I omitted the "I've Been Dumped" and "Lost Love" songs (like Where Would You Be) because everyone does those. And the songs above are all decent tunes (Independence Day is her best song ever, IMO), and they were released as singles.

Don't get me wrong, I have all of her CDs except for the Greatest Hits one that just came out, and each of these songs by themselves would be no big deal - but there seems to be a trend here.

Martina does a lot of work for battered wives and children, and other charities, so please don't think I'm bashing her, I'm just pointing out a trend I've noticed.

As for Shania, I can't understand how she is still considered country music. (I haven't listened to her new CD, so I don't know if she does anything different there)

OK...I get where you're coming from now; and you've got a point. The funny thing is that everything I've ever read or heard about her and her husband indicates that they have a wonderful relationship. I think that she just makes some social statements with her songs (Battered women & children); but I don't think she is a man-hater.

As for Shania...I believe that I read somewhere that her new CD was released in two formats- Pop & country. I don't consider her country, but the country stations play her stuff ("I'm gonna get you good" is her latest...it's awful IMHO).

Does viaCON own CMT? they are trying to seep their liberal ideology into country music. for instance, today the dixie chicks were on every time i turned on the television. also, after sheryl crow's hair-brained political activism, the "picture" video,in which she is featured prominently,
is on every 10 seconds.

dreamworks is also a player now. i think toby keith is on their label which is good, but has anybody else noticed on male country stars are dressing and doing their hair nowadays?

it is not the merle haggard or waylon manly look. they wear feminine shirts and jeans and the hair is terrible. highly-coiffed!!! what is going on? travis tritt is right, country ain't country no more!!!

clint black, alan jackson, trace adkins ,tritt, TOBY KEITH, Tim Mcgraw, Aaron Tippin, Kenny Chesney, GARY ALLAN, daryl worley are the only ones holding down the fort.

i know i listed a lot, but their are quite a few up and comers who look absolutely absurd!!!

btw, are people and instyle magazines owned by time warner?
baghdad sheryl is on the cover. funny she never so much as sniffed a high profile magazine cover until she went vichy.

i smell an agenda!!!

who did you vote for against them? in the best group video category i voted for rascal flatts "these days" a good song despite their highly coiffed appearance. i like the old alabama t-shirts, blue jeans, and $8 haircuts. but rascal flatts is a real good band.

but best group video category is the one that the vichy chicks are most likely to win. we will do our best and see how it comes out. if we fail and they do win (failure isn't an option, but just for argument's sake)there is a very good chance that they will be booed off the stage.

this thing has legs, i bet she regrets she ever opened her big dumb pie-hole.

is that story true about faith hill and gore? shame if it is. these people don't know how their bread gets buttered.

maybe it's just an abortion thing. but she has 3 kids of her own' and is adopted and likely respectful of the pro-life position.

if it's economics driven, that is BULL. any millionaire who thinks that middle class people shouldn't get a tax cut is a jacka$$. if tim and she want to send extra money to the treasury they can go right ahead.

also, both of tennesse's senators-- frist and thompson (at the time)--were in attendance at the the academy of country music awards or was it the american country music awards?

one of them.

me thinks the country stars need to recognize who their base is!!! trying to crossover into pop should not mean that you totally disavow all family values and country common sense. don't forget where you came from!

I don't think it's fair to complain about female country singers performing anti-male songs.

Male country singers, from Hank Williams, to Willie Nelson, to Lyle Lovett, have been singing about lying, cheating, murdering females since the dawn of the genre.

Country music wouldn't be country music without lyin' and cheatin' (and drinkin' and dreamin').

Speaking of agenda:

I note that Daryl Worley's pro-war song "Have you Forgotten" is not getting airplay.

Both of my favorite stations are playing Darryl Worley's new song - 104.3 in KC and 92.7 in Saint Joseph.

104.3 banned the Dixie Chicks today for Natalie's statement the other day. Woo!

I can't confirm that she played the Gore show, it's just one of those things I seem to recall. I'll have to search the net for proof.

Not at my station. We dumped all Dixie Chicks songs and replaced them with Darryl Worley. The Dixie Chicks backlash here is huge! A good 90% of callers (and there's been hundreds) never want to hear another Dixie Chicks song again. I've been on the air since 7pm and I've fielded a good 50 calls and have only had one pro-Chicks caller. I'm thinking I've been FReeped.
