[history]
More than 30 years ago, U.S. Rep. Pete Stark was one of thousands of activists who opposed the Vietnam War and the military draft. Now the Fremont Democrat has joined a small band of Congress members with a radical proposal to head off war with Iraq.

I oppose the draft, but if called I will answer for the same reason I pay my taxes, "render unto Caesar."
To: NormsRevenge
I would go for it if it includes all Congress Critters.

I like a debate on this. Thus far, the Murrican sheeples are willing to pay for a volunteer military.
They could slash the defense budget in half if they opted for a conscipt military, with pay and benefits like the good ol' days.

"War and the military draft. Now the Fremont Democrat has joined a small band of Congress members with a radical proposal to head off war with Iraq.
"Their plan? Bring back the draft."This is the ultimate anti-Bush administration plan, designed to make him a one term president....if it succeeds. As long as we keep bringing up the REASON and the type of leftist idiots who support this abomination, it'll be forgotten in the shadows and die.
Military sign-up has soared since 9/11 and is still way up. There's no need for a draft.

The members of today's armed forces are hardly the downtrodden of society. They're motivated men and women who are signing up for education and training and to begin developing a commendable work record. They'll take the skills learned into civilian society and be able to get good jobs.
To that Congressman I'd say, This ain't your father's army.

I oppose the draft, I do not oppose a militia, for home land security.
EVeryone could be made a member of the militia and be required to purchase the standad infantry weapon and equipment.
Ole Mad pete and charlie would love than.

What about having a draft for reasons other than just fighting wars...having draft in the peacetime also. For example, if any immigrants want to become citizens they should be required to serve in the military for a certain amount of time. It allows them to earn their citizenship (unlike the joke test they have now) and being an American citizen will have more of a value to them.
Speaking of value...we should also require all college students to enlist in the military for the same reasons.

Yeah...maybe so - but watch him get re-elected anyway. Voters are dumb....
To: TheBattman
Dumb is an understatement! Here in the Bay Area, and specifically in my neck of the Dark Forest, the likes of Mike Honda, Pete Stark, Zoe Lofgren, 2PAC Pelosi, Lantos, and Bezerkely Barbara Lee. etc run and win with impunity.
The hordes of liebrals love 'em. Sick.

If there were to be a "draft" it should be conducted by the states, into the organized militia of the state, which the federal government could then call on at need. The militia would of course be trained to federal standards as provided by the Constitution, and could be provided with federal weapons, also as provided in the Constitution. This is what the National Guard does today, without the draft component. I suspect that if volunteering from this revived militia into the federal military were allowed, there would be plenty of volunteers, probably more than the active duty components could use, so they could be somewhat selective.

Visions of a deluge of Saudi, Iranian, North Korean and Algerian immigrants to this country....not likely they'd be serving the interests of this country in our military. By keeping the military composed of willing joiners, we have a better chance of our soldiers serving our country while serving in our military.

Im all for bringing back the draft. There are far too many kids these days that enjoy and take for granted the rights provided to them as Americans but they have no idea what it means to make sacrifices in order to protect those rights.
If you dont want to go into the military, then you should at least be required to serve 2 years in public service. I think it would help instill a higher sense of pride in this country among our younger generations and it may even help to squash out some of the damn liberalism that has been plaguing this country.
