Buy Israeli!

Buy Israeli!

"Short of traveling to Israel, there really is no better way to help the desperate Israeli economy than to buy Israeli products on an ongoing basis." That is the theme of the new "Buy Israeli" campaign organized by the "Israel Now" consortium, which is dedicated to educating the Canadian Jewish public on issues such as this.

"With tourism in Israel down some 80%," writes Judy Hazan of Israel Now, "[and] with more than 87,000 business failures between 2001 and 2002, Israel is suffering an economic catastrophe. Almost a quarter of Israelis have seen their standard of living drop below the poverty line. Foreign boycotts of Israeli goods are gathering steam. Even in Canada, the Quebec Federation of Labour has become the latest group to advocate such action."

The "Buy Israeli" campaign posits that if every Jewish family in Toronto would use 10-20% of its weekly shopping budgets for Israeli goods - such as flowers, prepared foods, wines, cosmetics, plastic goods, clothing, jewelry, and Judaica - sales of Israeli products would double its current level. "Canada imports some $200 million in consumer goods from Israel each year," Hazan writes, "and an increase of 25% is equal to the total revenue from most UJA annual appeals!"

Among the Israeli products I am finding in the not very Jewish part of North Carolina where I am staying:

Obviously, Americans will want to buy American as much as possible, but if everyone added a few Israeli products to the shopping carts it would really help. While you're at it, try to avoid buying French, Belgian, German, or Russian products right now to protest their non-support of the United States.

A very cool gift from Israel are glass laser etchings. Some how, they etching is done INSIDE a solid piece of glass; its absolutely beautiful. Unfortunately, I don't know which company makes them.

Have one at home too. I have already been asked if I served. :) I usually wear it while hitting some of the places near the college campus.

Assuming the supporters of this approach are American citizens, I hope what they really mean is: Buy American first; if not available, buy Israeli; if not available, buy from reputable free country, ... and lastly buy from Iraq, and China, if you really must have the product.

Who wants to be that that is how they feel?

It involves two different laser beams that heat the acrylic at the point of their intersection and create a tiny bubble.

Heh, I recently bought a cloth steering wheel cover for my truck. Didn't even realize it was made in Israel until I installed it.

Coolest thing I've seen in a while; I didn't know Israel was in the design.

They now have the ability to do a cube with your own face in it. They sit you down and take a stereo picture of you. I've seen them in the Inner Harbor in Baltimore and the Santa Cruz (CA) Boardwalk.

I was told by the Santa Cruz guy that it's only one laser that they tune for a certain depth -- the same kind of laser they use in corrective-vision eye surgery.

Whole Foods carries all-natural Kosher marshmallows made in Israel. Expensive, so I didn't buy any, but maybe I'll pick up a package next time.
