Petition Online ^ | 01/01/2003 | Fred Savage

Posted on 03/04/2003 6:38:29 AM PST by jjm2111

To: U.S. Congress We the undersigned petition the U.S. Congress to pass laws that require minimum of four weeks of vacation per year for all full time workers, and one week of vacation per 10 hours of work per week for part-time workers.

The citizens of the United States are behind most of the developed European countries in vacation time per year.

More vacation time means: Better quality of life for the citizens Better quality employees More time spent with family and less crimes More money for tourism More jobs for employees More tax dollars for the government Sincerely,

I'm very impressed by all of your intelligent and mature comments on that petition. But really, shouldn't you get back to the playground where you obviously belong?

Free Republic, land of immature clods.

We're trying to get back to the playground, but we don't have enough vacation time yet to do it.

Yeah, but we are ahead "most of the developed European countries" in courage and freedom. Lets keep it that way.

The petitioners have never spent any time in Europe or they'd've been more careful about what they wish for.

No, but maybe I should get back to work, unlike those lazy, give-me-a-handout, SOBs at that petition. BTW, don't you ever smile or laugh during the day? All this doom and gloom is not good for you. Besides, those petitions are meaningless and are only meant to entertain. Anyone who thinks they really accomplish anything needs a reality check.

Well I do but they want to come to Louisiana and visiting on my turf is nice for them at times. They get one week for a couple years then it goes up. Now I understand that but you know if they have longeivity they get better but given the times employeers don't guarantee anyone longeivity. They want the committment from the employee but they do not reciprocate. It is a problem,,worker loyalty is thorny,,I say you owe employers exactly what they owe you. You work hard, put in the time, get your paycheck and they pay you. Beyond that they never guarantee a job and you can leave with two weeks notice which is about what they give you. The days of being enslaved for the company are over,,the contract has been broken. And that is why people want maximum benefits from the git go,,,never know when you are laid off, etc. The balance between employer and employee is a two way street. I do think the govt needn't be in the business of mandating four weeks,,if the company needs workers they will max out benefits. I just miss the girls and wish they had more leisure time,,,work shouldn't take up all one's time when one is young. Heck I need less vacation than they do as I am older and don't mind the grind like I did when young.

What a joke

It's no secret that America is the most productive nation on the planet because of our strong work ethic. Mandating that an employer provide an employee with four weeks of paid vacation is a quick way to flush our economy down the toilet.

If you want 35 hour work weeks and socialized medicine, go to France.

I'll bet if they work for their companies for several years, they'll have just that! It's called an "incentive" for longevity.

This is just plain not true.

I have worked continually for the last 30 years. A grand total of 3 employers, all large companies. For 24 of those 30 years I got two weeks of vacation per year. For the past 6 years I have had 3 weeks.

It frosts me no end to see the government drones get 4+ weeks of vacation (plus more holidays) on my tax money.

30 years ago, the conventional wisdom was that a government job was more secure and had more vacation, but paid less than a job in private industry.

These days, the leeches make more money, still have better security, and get more vacation.

4 weeks of vacation per year for 40 hours per week (full time)

1 week of vacation per year for 10 hours per week (part time)

As a friend of mine often said: it takes a lot of work to rule the world.

Good jobs will give you more vacation time, some it scales up (my company gives you 5 weeks once you've been here 5 years), some you can just negotiate it (my first boss on the software biz had 6 weeks, took a lot of arm twisting during the offer stage and a slight reduction in pay but he got it). So if you want more vacation time GET A BETTER JOB. This shouldn't be mandated by the government, NO vacation time number should be.

From your profile I see you identify yourself as a Libertarian.

If you really think the government should mandate the amount of vacation that private employers must give, then you need to change your profile.

We haven't had a 3 day vacation together since we started our small business 9 years ago. My husband is too afraid to leave for any extended period of time lest the building burn down due to employee negligence.
Who me worry? is the daily status quo among the majority of american workers.

So in an effort to restore family tranquility I plan to fire the employees (all 8 of them at 30k per year each), sell the business and get a McJob that lets us take 4 week vacations.

No more 941 payroll taxes every 15th of the month (15% of payroll), no more workers comp taxes - 10% of payroll) and an instant raise if we both hit the wage slave trail together.

The fed govt. subsists on payroll taxes paid monthly for the majority of its cash flow so too bad for them! I'm tired of supporting my govt and the lazy retirees who "deserve" every penny they can squeeze from a turnip.

Tsk, tsk. Now, look what you've started!

Name Comments

1467. Gray Davis This is a great idea. Hey, everyone.....come to California. Have WE got a welfare package for YOU!!

1466. al gore only four?

1465. Tom Daschle I'm not a hater. I'm a uniter from Free Republic.

1464. barbra streisand Childish comments, RJ? Seems to me the childish ones are the "something for nothing" comments.

1463. Lazy schlong Look world I want something for nothing. Bow to me!!!

1462. RJ The extremists and haters from the Free Republic website have unfortunately discovered this petition, in case anyone wants to know where all those childish comments are coming from.

1461. Christine Carney

1460. Don Parks Is this a JOKE! Go read Ayn Rand's Atlas Shrugged you lazy pieces of s**t!

1459. Nick Congress should mandate four weeks vacation by law. For a nation that claims to care about "family values," we do very little to actually help families. More vacation time would go a long way toward helping stressed-out parents have more time with their kids. Isn't that what it's all about?

1458. Fred Savage This has got to be the STOOOPIDEST idea I've ever had.

1457. Philippe Rothchild You Americans are stupid. The European economies are in the merde tank exactly because we have too much vacation. Well, that and the fact that we Frenchmen are generally lazy and only like to sit on our, how do you say, asses, and smoke Camels and drink and laugh at Americans. Your petition is silly. Grow up and get your lazy asses to work.
