This is turning into a keystone cops operation. There is no coordination, no firm timetables, no ultimatums to turkey or anyone else, and we have ship and troops sitting offshore because turkey is jerking us around. This is Jimmy Carter type weakness and people here and overseas can smell it. Bush,Cheney,Powell, and others better get their act together soon or they'll be one- termers.

The impression that nobody knows what the hell they're doing filters down, and I worry about a very sloppy operation with far to many casualties.

I can see the AP story now:

Two factors overshadow all others in Iraq now. First, Bush is giving domestic groups in Iraq (the Iraq military, the Kurds) additional time to effect regime change by coup d'etat. Second, the positioning of missiles in southern Iraq within striking distance of U.S. forces could become the grounds for a defensive, preemptive strike by the U.S. to avert Iraq's deadly first strike of chemical or biological weapons. Bush has considerable control over the timing of the first, but less over the timing of the second.

At this point, the controversy over Turkey is irrelevant. It does not define the critical path of actions to war. Moreover, the armored ground invasion from the north finds a reasonable substitute in a sustained campaign of merciless, relentless bombing.

The pressure is there that's for sure, while I won't move on the need to remove Saddam

The need to remove Saddam is for his neighbors. Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Israel, Kuwait, Bahrain, UAE, etc. If we wanted we could right now offer Saddam to pull out and leave him alone in exchange for US companies having the right to deal with oil. He would take it (he has already offered it in fact) and he would not attack us or otherwise bother us.

But he would torture and maim his own people. He would attack his neighbors and attempt to take them over. He would stir up trouble in Turkey. He would eat the Gulf Countries, and he would make Saudi Arabia pay big time.

He could make Europe and Japan and OPEC dance, but we are much less dependent on him and would have rights to his oil anyway if a deal were made.

We are in effect, going to war to support our ungrateful friends and overall general world stability. At some point, you have to wonder if its worth all the abuse. Perhaps at some point the world needs a new dose of American isolationism and view a United States that has the morals and foreign policy of France.

True enough. The first American aircraft carrier offensive in the Pacific theater of war took place on February 1, 1942 - less than two months after Pearl Harbor. The Battle of Midway was about six months after Pearl Harbor, on June 4-5, 1942.
