A Very Sad Thing To See
Posted on 03/02/2003 8:05:39 PM PST by lawnguy
I don't know if this has been mentioned, but I saw a piece of video today that showed an Iraqi man jumping into the vehicle of the UN inspectors. This poor man apparently had a book that he wanted the world to see. This reportedly documented torture and abuse that he had witnessed or suffered personally.
The inspectors sat on their collective asses and allowed the Iraqi "police" to drag him out of the vehicle and off to whatever terrible fate awaited him.
I couldn't help but wonder if a similar thing happened on some street in Germany many years ago. A jewish citizen trying to get the word out to the world. But nobody listened.
Where is Martin Sheen on THIS man's behalf? How can Hans Blix look at himself in the mirror knowing they did nothing to save that poor man?
I'm absolutely ashamed of many of my fellow citizens who can sit by and favor doing nothing, and I have absolute respect for my President who hears a higher calling, sees a bigger picture.
I must also say that this communtiy is very helpful. It gives me hope for our country.(Usually ;)

I have a hunch that after Iraq is secured, the Hague court will lose its credibility the same way the UN is losing what little it has left. I don't expect them to pay much attention to the crimes against humanity committed by Saddam and his minions. The Iraqis will have to hunt these animals down themselves, and I have no doubt that they will.

This guy couldn't be to bright trusting the UN to provide him protection and justice. This is truely symbolic of how the UN really works..
Sadly I don't see the media making a big deal of it. The poor fellow is room temperature by now.

I agree it's sad, but what were the inspectors to do, offer him asylum in their SUV? Hopefully they at least looked at his book and will pass along what they saw.

By sending in these inspectors, we endangered a lot of people including them. No Iraqi they come in contact with safe. Sadly the inspectors seem to be the only ones who do not realize this. Of course there are a lot of people who couldn't care less about this, but people who realize what's going on should. The sooner we get the inspectors out of Iraq and conduct our business, the better off the world will be. Then on to North Korea. If China wants to mix it up, better now that later. Sooner or later it's a done deal!

Hopefully they at least looked at his book... They did not look at his book. The UN guy just sat there looking at his shoes while the minders pulled him out and turned him over to the guards.
Someone who recognized him was on TV and said he had talked to the guy's family both here and in Iraq. He disappeared. they have heard nothing from him.
Blix is working for Saddam.

I didn't see that, and almost glad I didn't! I guess the UN inspectors have no power to intercede, even when they know what's going to happen to the man!? They probabily handed the book over too.

Is there a link to the video?
To: lawnguy
I saw that video about 2 weeks ago. Like you it made me ill. The inspectors did nothing...They could have demanded that he be kept with them until they read his information. I'm sure he is dead now. It's horrible and we all saw it.

I'm not sure what the legal position is, probably pretty fuzzy, but the UN Inspectors could have argued that the inside of their car was, effectively, similar to embassy territory, and that the police had no jurisdiction to remove someone from their car. They would have had to be very tough to make it stick, but would Saddam have dared to provoke an incident with the UN?
Instead, it was the UN that didn't dare provoke an incident with Saddam.
This sort of thing has happened before, of course, most notoriously when allied forces turned over several million displaced troops to Stalin at the end of the war. they were shipped off to Siberia and killed.

I saw it a couple of months ago, and, like you, it was really distressing. That fat do-nothing inspector played like he did not even see him. He just kept looking forward. That was a UN car. The inspectors could have said, "Wait a min. Let us see just what he wants."
The guy was not brandishing any weapons - just a notebook. He was desperate. It did remind me of those who turned their backs on people in Hitler's Germany. Perhaps it reminds us of the French turncoats.

I haven't seen the video, but I heard about this incident and one like it a couple of weeks ago. I think two men did something very drastic on the same day but the U.N. inspectors did not intervene to help. I guess they (inspectors) take the view of a wildlife photographer--let the lion rip the throat out of that gazelle. In one instance it's the correct thing to do--when it comes to humans it's immoral.

To: beaversmom
That is why the UN is useless in Iraq. Get them out and let our troops do the job.

I did not see the video. I'm almost glad. The sooner we liberate those people the better. Stories like this just prove my theory that the left is only concerned with human rights when it is convienant for them.
