FREEPERS...Need to support movie GODS AND GENERALS

Posted on 02/25/2003 6:10:50 AM PST by Gopher Broke

Below is a note from Howard Phillips on this great movie...I plan to see it this weekend. My friends tell me this movie is EXCELLENT

The Liberal media HATES this movie because it shows soldiers praying and reading the Bible....so we need to SUPPORT IT!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

As some of you know, I was involved with the premiere of "Gods and Generals" here in Richmond thru the Museum of the Confederacy. I am sending along this comment, with a hope that you will take in the film. The liberal press has already bashed it, and unless there is good attendance this week, you will not see it on the big screen!

Barton ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Dear friend,

If you are like me, you seldom go to the movies.

This weekend, I urge you to make an exception, so that you will be among the first to see the greatest American history movie ever made - - - "Gods and Generals".

It is important that you see the movie this weekend, because next week it may be gone.

That's because in this age of moral corruption, gratuitous violence, and degrading, profane "music", there may not be much of an audience for "Gods and Generals"- - - in which case theater managers will pull it in favor of a more lucrative production.

"Gods and Generals" is an historically accurate account of America's Civil War, in which Southerners waged their "Second War of Independence" - - - led by General Robert E. Lee, who was, by marriage, a descendant of General George Washington, the man who led the rebel forces against King George III after the colonies had declared themselves to be free and independent states.

General Lee is faithfully portrayed in "Gods and Generals" by one of America's greatest actors, Robert Duvall - - - accompanied by Stephen Lang, who brilliantly depicts General Stonewall Jackson, a great Christian man whose strategic genius is still studied at military training institutes all over the world.

Carrying out Abraham Lincoln's orders to "preserve the Union" by invading the Southern states, is Colonel Joshua Chamberlain of Maine, played by Jeff Daniels. Mira Sorvino delivers a great performance as Mrs. Chamberlain (even as Kali Roca gives life to Mrs. Anna Jackson).

There are other memorable characterizations by Brian Mallon as General Winfield Scott Hancock, by Bruce Boxleitner as General James Longstreet, by Bo Brinkman, by Kevin Conway, and by others.

Some present day politicians have cameo appearances in the film: Senators Phil Gramm of Texas, Robert Byrd of West Virginia, and George Allen of Virginia, as well as Congressmen Dana Rohrabacher of California and Ed Markey of Massachusetts.

American Enterprise Magazine says " 'GODS & GENERALS' is not only the finest movie ever made about the Civil War, it is also the best American historical film. Period."

This movie is highly entertaining - - - but I am writing to you because it is so profoundly educational.

As the father of 6 children, with 14 grandchildren, I know how hard it is to convey the truth in the face of Left-wing media and the inadequacy and misdirection of the government schools. My wife and I are home-schooling parents.

"Gods and Generals" has been a great encouragement to my family and to all of my friends who have seen it.

Virtually every word, every scene in the film, is historically accurate. It is not fiction. You will see how Americans - - - on both sides of the Mason-Dixon line - - - prayed, how they lived, how they fought, and how they sacrificed.

"Gods and Generals" will afford you a greater understanding of American history, of our U.S. Constitution as originally understood, and of our heritage.

That is why, as Chairman of the American History Education Project of the U.S. Taxpayers Institute, a non-profit charitable and educational organization, I am sending this e-mail to you and to others who I am confident will thank me - - - if they follow my advice and see the film - - - this weekend if at all possible.

Please send me a return e-mail after you have seen the film to let me know what you think. I will be grateful for your comments.

With appreciation and best wishes, I am

Sincerely

Howard Phillips Chairman American History Education Project

history books for the past 100 years or so have been written by Democrats

This may be, but why is it, then, that when I was growing up through our infamous public edjerkashun system, it was always inferred that the North was right and Lincoln (patron saint of the Republican Party) should be celebrated? Yeah, I attended schools in northern states, but this just seems very odd if the "Orwellian" 'Rats truly controlled the textbooks.

Southern edjerkated FReepers chime in here.

I'll see the movie, but not until it comes out in video. In fact, it would be better to see such a long movie that way. The pro-Confederate/anti-USA stance of the movie is not a deal-breaker for me. What is troublesome is -- according to the reviews -- the endless speech-making, faulty editing, and other cinematic blunders.

My father, a WWII combat veteran, laughed at the notion that soldiers of any era quoted the classics or made erudite speeches before and during battles.

It is too simplistics to think of the Civil War as between North v. South. Plenty of Democrats in the North, known as Copperheads, supported the Confederacy -- the New York City draft rioters, the Democrat candidates for governors of Illinois and Ohio who were paid Confederate agents, etc. In the South, the blacks (don't they count?) were pro-Union as were the "Billy Yanks in the Hills". For decades after the war, these hillbillies of Apallachia and the Ozarks remained staunch Republicans, as did the blacks.

And without Abraham Lincoln, we would not be living in the UNITED States of America, so all patriots should indeed celebrate him.

Ted Turner - Christian values ? Are you BLIND? Please take time and look outside your thoughts on this one. If Satan made a RARE good film with Christian values would you support it?

Not much difference.

What do Ted Turner, Bill Clinton, Hillary Clinton, Tom Daschle, Nancy Pelosi, and Ted Kennedy have in common with the Confederates? All Democrats!

film is as accurate as possible to history.

Yep. And a lot of this film was shot in my backyard - Winchester VA, Martinsburg WV, Sharpsburg PA, etc. The scene where Johhny Reb and Billy Yank exchanged tobbackie and coffee in the middle of the Rappohannock sure looked like the Shenandoah river by Harpers Ferry WV - low and lots of rocks.

It's interesting how there's so much history and historic old homes around here that camera shots could be mixed and matched - the background scenes (exterior AND interior) are in many cases authentic!

I totally agree . All was done superbly well. I do believe that Stephen Lang's portrayal of General Jackson was of award winning calibre. Oh, I forgot, the people who give out such things probably never read a book and think this was "made up stuff" to make the South look good.
Lang WAS General T J Jackson.

Every Confederate soldier was a Democrat. The hatred within the Democratic Party for the UNITED States of America, the Constitution, ands the flag goes back to the 1860s and beyond. See http://www.republicanbasics.com/ to read about a history book from the Republican point of view.

Do check your facts. A lot of Confederate soldiers were not Democrats but supported the Constitutional Union Party, which was another party that put up a candidate (Bell) in 1860. The terms Democratic and Republican have swapped meanings in the intervening 143 years, and during the War it was the Democrats who supported the positions most Republicans embrace now.

Why are you are so consumed with hatred for Confederates and the South now, 140 years later? What is the source of your abiding bitterness toward all these people who are dead and have done you no harm? You sound like a lot of black people who can't get over the fact that their great-great-great-grandparents were slaves.

I might support this movie but ONLY if the director edits out Mrs. Chamberlain's farewell talk to her hubby. That went on and on and on and on and ate up valuable screen time for no useful purpose.

You're right. And Mira Sorvino's casting as Mrs. Chamberlain was atrocious.

Happily, Kali Rocha's casting as Mary Anna Morrison Jackson was just about perfect.

Turner Calls Catholics ‘Jesus Freaks’

Ted Turner, who in the past has managed to insult Christians, Poles, blacks and women, among others, called Catholic employees at a CNN gathering "Jesus freaks," according to Fox News and the New York Post, which is owned by the network.

The occasion was a meeting in the Washington newsroom prior to a party for departing broadcaster Bernard Shaw, which took place on Ash Wednesday.

Turner, who is co-founder of the news network, took notice of a few foreheads smudged with ash, according to the report.

“I was looking at this woman and I was trying to figure out what was on her forehead,” he reportedly said. “At first I thought you were in the [Seattle] earthquake. I realized you’re just Jesus freaks.”

‘As Dumb As John Rocker’

Why would you support Ted Turner? Why would I see this Movie? Because it is good?

Clinton Praises Turner

Monday September 22, 1997 12:36 PM EDT

Clinton praises Turner

NEW YORK, Sept. 22 (UPI) _ President Clinton (Monday) praised CNN founder Ted Turner as a ``truly visionary American for his remarkable donation'' of $1 billion to strengthen U.N. humanitarian institutions. He also told the U.N. General Assembly he hoped others would follow Turner's gesture.

Saying that Lincoln was basically evil, or had evil motives in what he did, is as crazy as saying that X42 was basically good. That doesn't mean people won't do it.

The election of 1860 took place before the Confederacy was created. During the war, the Confederates shifted completely over to the Democratic Party. The eleven rebel states sent Representatives and Senators to the U.S. Congress in late 1865 -- everyone one of them, such as former Whig Alexander Stephens, was a Democrat.

I don't hate the South, not even the killers of 400,000 U.S. troops in the 1860s. The 200,000 southern blacks and 100,000 southern whites were southerners too.

Christianity is portrayed heavily (and accurately) in this film. All the men pray and look to our Lord for salvation throughout the movie.

I found it refreshing that a mainstream movie embraced strong leadership founded in Christian faith.

It was good to see strong Christian men protrayed favorably. If Turner is anti-Christian, atheist, etc....he didn't show that in the movie.
