FREEPERS...Need to support movie GODS AND GENERALS

Posted on 02/25/2003 6:10:50 AM PST by Gopher Broke

Below is a note from Howard Phillips on this great movie...I plan to see it this weekend. My friends tell me this movie is EXCELLENT

The Liberal media HATES this movie because it shows soldiers praying and reading the Bible....so we need to SUPPORT IT!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

As some of you know, I was involved with the premiere of "Gods and Generals" here in Richmond thru the Museum of the Confederacy. I am sending along this comment, with a hope that you will take in the film. The liberal press has already bashed it, and unless there is good attendance this week, you will not see it on the big screen!

Barton ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Dear friend,

If you are like me, you seldom go to the movies.

This weekend, I urge you to make an exception, so that you will be among the first to see the greatest American history movie ever made - - - "Gods and Generals".

It is important that you see the movie this weekend, because next week it may be gone.

That's because in this age of moral corruption, gratuitous violence, and degrading, profane "music", there may not be much of an audience for "Gods and Generals"- - - in which case theater managers will pull it in favor of a more lucrative production.

"Gods and Generals" is an historically accurate account of America's Civil War, in which Southerners waged their "Second War of Independence" - - - led by General Robert E. Lee, who was, by marriage, a descendant of General George Washington, the man who led the rebel forces against King George III after the colonies had declared themselves to be free and independent states.

General Lee is faithfully portrayed in "Gods and Generals" by one of America's greatest actors, Robert Duvall - - - accompanied by Stephen Lang, who brilliantly depicts General Stonewall Jackson, a great Christian man whose strategic genius is still studied at military training institutes all over the world.

Carrying out Abraham Lincoln's orders to "preserve the Union" by invading the Southern states, is Colonel Joshua Chamberlain of Maine, played by Jeff Daniels. Mira Sorvino delivers a great performance as Mrs. Chamberlain (even as Kali Roca gives life to Mrs. Anna Jackson).

There are other memorable characterizations by Brian Mallon as General Winfield Scott Hancock, by Bruce Boxleitner as General James Longstreet, by Bo Brinkman, by Kevin Conway, and by others.

Some present day politicians have cameo appearances in the film: Senators Phil Gramm of Texas, Robert Byrd of West Virginia, and George Allen of Virginia, as well as Congressmen Dana Rohrabacher of California and Ed Markey of Massachusetts.

American Enterprise Magazine says " 'GODS & GENERALS' is not only the finest movie ever made about the Civil War, it is also the best American historical film. Period."

This movie is highly entertaining - - - but I am writing to you because it is so profoundly educational.

As the father of 6 children, with 14 grandchildren, I know how hard it is to convey the truth in the face of Left-wing media and the inadequacy and misdirection of the government schools. My wife and I are home-schooling parents.

"Gods and Generals" has been a great encouragement to my family and to all of my friends who have seen it.

Virtually every word, every scene in the film, is historically accurate. It is not fiction. You will see how Americans - - - on both sides of the Mason-Dixon line - - - prayed, how they lived, how they fought, and how they sacrificed.

"Gods and Generals" will afford you a greater understanding of American history, of our U.S. Constitution as originally understood, and of our heritage.

That is why, as Chairman of the American History Education Project of the U.S. Taxpayers Institute, a non-profit charitable and educational organization, I am sending this e-mail to you and to others who I am confident will thank me - - - if they follow my advice and see the film - - - this weekend if at all possible.

Please send me a return e-mail after you have seen the film to let me know what you think. I will be grateful for your comments.

With appreciation and best wishes, I am

Sincerely

Howard Phillips Chairman American History Education Project

Only if they can sit still for four hours. They may not be old enough to understand what is happening on screen. It has several loud battle scenes. I suspect 5 and 7 might be too young just yet.

I have to agree. I did go to this movie totally prepared to love it. But it could of easliy been edited down quite a lot and made better for it.

I did enjoy it though.

That speech was pretty campy. Jeff looked uncomfortable in his role. So did Duvall. I was surprised at that. But I did like the movie and would see it again.

Many of the things said during the movie were lifted verbatim from letters and reports written at the time. That having been said, the editing could have been better. :-)

About Lang, I thought he did a great job. But I suspect that Stonewall Jackson was probably less bombastic than played by Mr. Lang.

He did however do an excellent job with the material he was given.

He was also excellent in the role of George Pickett, in Gettysburg. He made Pickett come to life for me.

Ted Turner, for all his faults, has done a good thing with this movie.

We tried to see it, but it was sold out. I won't get there this weekend, but will do so next week. The thread I read yesterday had such different opinions on the movie. Some people actually said it was boring, and others really liked it.

Sitting in a theater for 4 hrs doesn't bother me. Go early and find a good seat.

I heard they have brought back the time honored traditon of the "intermission" back for this movie.

That would be a necessity for maintaining a dry seat, gaining in year's, and nothing works quite like it used to! I just hate missing parts of a movie. Someone in an earlier post say's the home video version is going to be around 6 hour's. Blackbird.

I'll save my money. Ted Turner bank rolled the entire production.

Ted is a godless man and anti-Christian.

Also I've heard that the DVD/video release will be significantly longer.

There were many slaves and freed blacks that fought. That you deny it means nothing to the fact.

No, there were not.

There is no creditible evidence of any number of black CSA soldiers:

"It's pure fantasy,' contends James McPherson, a Princeton historian and one of the nation's leading Civil War scholars. Adds Edwin Bearss, historian emeritus at the National Park Service: 'It's b.s., wishful thinking.' Robert Krick, author of 10 books on the Confederacy, has studied the records of 150,000 Southern soldiers and found fewer than a dozen were black. 'Of course, if I documented 12, someone would start adding zeros,' he says.

"These and other scholars say claims about black rebels derive from unreliable anecdotes, a blurring of soldiers and laborers, and the rapid spread on the Internet of what Mr. McPherson calls 'pseudohistory.' Thousands of blacks did accompany rebel troops -- as servants, cooks, teamsters and musicians. Most were slaves who served involuntarily; until the final days of the war, the Confederacy staunchly refused to enlist black soldiers.

"Some blacks carried guns for their masters and wore spare or cast-off uniforms, which may help explain eyewitness accounts of blacks units. But any blacks who actually fought did so unofficially, either out of personal loyalty or self-defense, many historians say.

"They also bristle at what they see as the disingenuous twist on political correctness fueling the black Confederate fad. 'It's a search for a multicultural Confederacy, a desperate desire to feel better about your ancestors,' says Leslie Rowland, a University of Maryland historian. 'If you suggest that some blacks supported the South, then you can deny that the Confederacy was about slavery and white supremacy.'

"David Blight, an Amherst College historian, likens the trend to bygone notions about happy plantation darkies.' Confederate groups invited devoted ex-slaves to reunions and even won Senate approval in 1923 for a "mammy" monument in Washington (it was never built). Black Confederates, Mr. Blight says, are a new and more palatable way to 'legitimize the Confederacy.'"

-- Wall Street Journal, May 8, 1997

"Mr. Wickham said that our brave soldiers, who have fought so long and nobly, would not stand to be thus placed side by side with negro soldiers. He was opposed to such a measure. The day that such a bill passed Congress sounds the death knell of this Confederacy. The very moment an order goes forth from the War Department authorizing the arming and organizing of negro soldiers there was an eternal end to this struggle.-(Voice-That's so.)

Gen. Howell Cobb, an unbeliever in this expedient, wrote from Macon, Ga., January 8, 1865: "I think that the proposition is the most pernicious idea that has been suggested since the war began. You cannot make soldiers of slaves or slaves of soldiers. The moment you resort to this your white soldiers are lost to you, and one reason why this proposition is received with favor by some portions of the army is because they hope that when the negro comes in they can retire. You cannot keep white and black troops together, and you cannot trust negroes alone. They won't make soldiers, as they are wanting in every qualification necessary to make one."

-- from the debate on arming the blacks in the rebel congress, February, 1865

"Yes, Administrative Simplification is much too long and hard to type in. If you want more pings, adsimp, you need a shorter name, ala Formerly Brainwashed Democrat becoming FBD."

OK I give! First let me at least check out what AdminSimp means in French or other surrender terms.

I still like Complexification. HIPAA has kept food on my table for 2 years now. Although I cringe whenever I visit my doctor, who is clueless about the federal mandate.

And yes, Richmond FReepers, lunch soon!

Every Confederate soldier was a Democrat.

Actually that too is not true. Some were Constitutional Unionists from 1860 and old southern Whigs, including some in my own family.

It is a neo-Confederate myth that any blacks at all fought for the Confederacy. In fact, such was specifically prohibited by CSA law until March 1865

Speeding is prohibited by law. Does that mean that it never happens as well?
