People who have Botox injections to get rid of lines and to make them look younger may develop new wrinkles in difference places, doctors said yesterday.
Skin specialists believe that the body tries to recreate the facial expressions that the treatment has smoothed out.
As a result, new wrinkles arise in mobile areas of the face, adjacent to the frozen parts that have been injected with Botox.
"What can happen is that other, nearby muscles compensate - this can have the effect of actually creating new wrinkles," said Dr David Becker, clinical assistant professor of dermatology at Weill Cornell Medical College in New York.
Botox injections are derived from botulinum toxin A. Botulinum is one of the most potent toxins known causing progressive paralysis of the muscles and other damage to the nervous system.
As a beauty treatment, Botox temporarily paralyses muscles in the face, typically the "scowl lines" on the forehead, giving an unlined, younger appearance.
"In this case, following treatment, muscles in the upper nose, middle eyebrow and eyelid may try to recreate the expression of a scowl. Repetitions of this action cause new wrinkles," Dr Becker said.
He said the new lines tended to be less prominent but that clients would have to decide whether to discontinue their Botox treatment or have more of it to deal with them.
His warning is published in the journal Cosmetic Dermatology from the American Society of Cosmetic Dermatology and Aesthetic Surgery.
In May last year, Boots offered the "lunchtime" temporary face lift with Botox, for £200, and there was a surge in demand for the treatment.
Last week, there were reports that film producers were turning down actors who used Botox because of its effects on facial expression.

Or not ..... hehe!

Judging by her expression, I'd say she already knows.
