Speaker of the House Dennis Hastert has suggested, among other things, that we put warning labels on French wine alerting the consumer that the French use bovine blood to clarify the wine. I think thats a great idea. Other than being generally disgusting to vegetarians who thought French wine was drinkable, it highlights the risk of mad cow disease, via that bovine blood tainting French wine.

I'd have to start buying French products before I could boycott or worry about them.

Has anyone in America ever gotten Mad Cow from drinking French wine? I know of not a single case.

I think this is a perfect opportunity for an illustration, in good taste if possible.

Try California wines! I prefer Meridian. And there is an excellent Texas wine - Messina Hoff. We could all list our favorite domestic wines and waters here, and use it as our shopping list as we avoid French inferior products!!!!

So? So, with many millions of bottles of French Wine having been drunk in America over the past several decades and not a single case of Mad Cow resulting, I think a warning label regarding bovine blood and the possibility of Mad Cow is stupid.

A warning label indicating to the consumer that the beverage they are about to ingest is French should be sufficient.

How about a label on all French, German and Belgian products...showing a weasel...or at least making it CRYSTAL CLEAR where these products come from....

Try California wines! Living here on the Central Coast of California, which is rapidly becoming a major area for wine production, I say "hear, hear"!
Must admit, though, we love to visit beautiful Yamhill County in Oregon, which boasts some wonderful wineries. Washington State is becoming a booming area for wine production as well. And let's not forget New York wines either.
Heck, for imported wines, try an Australian Austin Vale - excellent.

Subtile points seem to be lost on you.

A few suggestions from an amatuer winemaker:
Support your local winemakers. It is a tough business, particularly if you are outside of California. I try as much as possible to buy wines from Texas and Missouri (my old stomping grounds). You will find many, many interesting vintages from small nearby operations and your patronage will help them produce improved wines. The Messina Hoff is excellant. Cynthiana from Mount Pleasant winery in Defiance MO. is to die for.

It is not lost on me. But we do not need ever more government meddling and labeling on products.

Have you tried Messina Hoff's Port? It is outstanding. Totally sublime. They've won gold medals around the world for it. They have a bottle around $10 and the double barrel aged reserve for about $22. Both are fantastic. Every time I let a friend taste some, they go nuts over it.
