***Northeast Snowstorm*** February 16-17 2003 (Official Thread)
self | self

Posted on 02/16/2003 8:19:33 AM PST by SamAdams76

Moderators, please pull if a similar thread has been started. I did a search on "snow" and blizzard" and came up with nothing.

What originally looked to be primarily a mid-Atlantic snowstorm has blossomed overnight into a monster snowstorm that threatens to shut down the major cities of the Northeast for tomorrow.

Just got the latest forecasts. Washington D.C. area will see 1-2 feet. Philly will see 17-34 inches according to their local mets. NYC will see 1-2 feet. And Southern New England (including Boston), which was originally thought to be missing this storm, is now pegged to get at least 10-20 inches before all is said and done with possible blizzard conditions tomorrow night as the storm explodes ("bombogenisis") off Nantucket island during the day.

Some very impressive snowfall reports already coming in despite the fact that the storm hasn't even developed off the coast yet. Some 8 inches is on the ground in the DC area and snow is falling heavily in the Philly area and parts of New Jersey. This snow is NOT from the storm that is expected to develop off the Carolinas this afternoon, move northeast and "explode" off Nantucket Island during tomorrow.

These storms are never a sure thing until they happen because they are so unpredictable. But this storm has all the ingredients to make it a storm of historic proportions from Washington D.C. to Portland, Maine. If everything falls together just right, we could be looking at 2 feet (or more) of snow in many urban areas of the Northeast over the next 36 hours.

Please post your local reports here.

And hopefully there will only be two or three more months of your bad weather.

Thank you for your kind thoughts. Hopefully there will be enough wood and bourbon to last. And be careful Joe. Don't slip on any rotten oranges and be sure to pray for Gray Davis. Ah yes, beautiful weather, oranges and Gray Davis. (Heh Heh).

I just finished the first ten feet of walk outside my front door. At this rate it will be Friday before I hit the sidewalk.

Wanted to know if you were coming in????

Non-emergency vehicles are still prohibited on all Delaware roadways.

The drifts on the one side of my van are up to my shoulder - and I'm not exactly short!!!

Nice to see yuo didn't lose power.

I got a four foot drift against my front door. I'm going to have to bail out the window to start shoveling.

thanks - the freezing rain stuff is starting now - so there is still a chance.

Fortunately my front door opens in, but that happened to another friend of mine this morning - he forgot to prop open the storm door last night and couldn't get out.

I am reporting in from Southern Ohio. We don't have all that much on the ground less than 6 inches but the problem is it was mixed Precipitation and now has turned to almost solid Ice.

Our street crews have no way to deal with this. I watched the Plows and all they can do is scrap off the crusty top layer. Salt does no good because it just freezes again.

I live behind my down town business and am looking out the front window as I type. We are the only business out of 20 some that is open. None of them would close for Presidents day in fact most had sales planned.

This is the strangest weather I have witnessed in a long time.

BTW can this all be blamed on Global Warming?

Speaking of Global Warming I could sure use some down this way right now. Anybody got some to spare?

Exactly my problem. I'm thinking about removing the lower panel of the door...and tunneling out......I'll let you know when I get to periscope depth.

You were right last night. I was doomed.

I'm going out to shovel. If I don't post in half an hour send nitroglycerine tablets.

Another Maltese owner! During snowstorms, we make him his own private shoveled walkway onto the grass with a circle carved out of snow at the end. He comes back into the house looking like a snowball anyway.

Update from Bucks County (just north of Philly)

We have at least 15"-18" of undrifted snow -- but the drifts are much higher -- snow piled about 2 and a half feet on my deck, a quarter of the way up the french doors, over 3 feet on the lower level -- we can get out the front door but then we hit another drift that has to be over 3 feet -- one side of the cars are half buried, the other side is ice-covered -- it sounds like we're getting some sleety stuff right now -- mixed in with blowing snow -- not nice -- my poor son has to go out and shovel soon -- he doesn't even know where to start -- I figure we'll take a little section at a time

My oldest son is up near Boston -- they're just getting the start of the storm -- he has to open & close the store (Auto Parts) today -- from 11:00 to 8:00, chances are he's going to go home early
