***Northeast Snowstorm*** February 16-17 2003 (Official Thread)
self | self

Posted on 02/16/2003 8:19:33 AM PST by SamAdams76

Moderators, please pull if a similar thread has been started. I did a search on "snow" and blizzard" and came up with nothing.

What originally looked to be primarily a mid-Atlantic snowstorm has blossomed overnight into a monster snowstorm that threatens to shut down the major cities of the Northeast for tomorrow.

Just got the latest forecasts. Washington D.C. area will see 1-2 feet. Philly will see 17-34 inches according to their local mets. NYC will see 1-2 feet. And Southern New England (including Boston), which was originally thought to be missing this storm, is now pegged to get at least 10-20 inches before all is said and done with possible blizzard conditions tomorrow night as the storm explodes ("bombogenisis") off Nantucket island during the day.

Some very impressive snowfall reports already coming in despite the fact that the storm hasn't even developed off the coast yet. Some 8 inches is on the ground in the DC area and snow is falling heavily in the Philly area and parts of New Jersey. This snow is NOT from the storm that is expected to develop off the Carolinas this afternoon, move northeast and "explode" off Nantucket Island during tomorrow.

These storms are never a sure thing until they happen because they are so unpredictable. But this storm has all the ingredients to make it a storm of historic proportions from Washington D.C. to Portland, Maine. If everything falls together just right, we could be looking at 2 feet (or more) of snow in many urban areas of the Northeast over the next 36 hours.

Please post your local reports here.

Fairfax, VA. we have about 8-10 inches so far. my husband and 11 yo son are attempting to get home from Providence, RI, where he played in a hockey tournament. the last i heard they were going to attempt the TRAIN bc the airports are all closed down.

My JRT is about 15" tall and he is up to his shoulders in the snow out there, and loving it. he would be lost, as he is mostly white, but has black ears. he loves to romp in it, but is always eager to come in and warm up after a few minutes.

The latest says that you might get more than us here in the north--am now going to call my daughter in Alexandria--she should be up by now.

My kids at home are disappointed that school's out this week, since this would be one snow day fer sure! Good luck and stay warm...

Except that we are supposed to get slammed by thunderstorms in Central Florida this afternoon.....

Interesting reports and pictures, but could ya'll please tell us where you are when you give snow reports?

Here in Northern Virginia, we already had several inches on the ground before this all started, but the roads were clear. So far we've had well over 10 inches with this storm, coming down about an inch an hour, with "heavy" snow expected lated today. Current temp is 14 degrees; 0 degree windchill. Not enough wind to be a blizzard.

Currently, "Through the noon hour...expect heavy snow possibly mixed briefly with sleet. Accumulation rates of 1 to 1.5 inches per hour will continue. Some areas could experience thundersnow where accumulation rates could briefly reach 2 inches per hour." Snowfall totals of a foot and a half to two feet are expected.

D.C. Mayor Williams is in Puerto Rico – where the weather was in the 80s yesterday afternoon.

The forecasters around here have been predicting this one for days, so everyone has had plenty of time to stock up on milk, bread, toilet paper, videos, library books, etc. As long as the power and gas stay on, no problems. All three airports are closed.

The unofficial snow record, by the way, was the "Washington-Jefferson" storm. Both of them recorded 36 inches of snow in their diaries.

I'm still having trouble getting mine out - but won't have to worry about losing them - they're both jet black.

Well I've got the munchkin all bundled up - time for the shovel.

See you all later!!!

D.C. Mayor Williams is in Puerto Rico

I distinctly remember when Marion "that $itch set me up" Barry was out of town, someplace warm, for a bad snowstorm.

You always know it's going to be a big storm when the mayor is out of town! During the biggest snowstorm to hit Boston in a century back in February 1978, Mayor Kevin White was down in Florida! I think the current mayor of Boston, Mumbles Menino, was out of town for a couple of our recent big snows as well.

Damn I love this stuff (its in my blood).

Roger that!   I feel as excited as a like a little kid who's dad just said "You're not going to have school tomorrow."  Mind you, he was the ultimate school closing authority.

Just came back in from a walk with my dog; it's chilly out there and it's coming down heavy in Burlington County with about six inches so far.  I only saw one car on the road: police officer heading into work.  Going back out for more now that I have my ski mittens out of storage.

Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow!   Storm of the millenium?!

My mother remembers when it really used to snow. She amazed at snow when she first came to this country. Trinidad and Tobago is right on the equator so it never snows there. She whines about moving to Florida every winter.

Had my father been alive, I would have to hear ever story about delivering hats to the rich people on Long Island riding his bike in the snow. Across the Brooklyn Bridge no less!
