***Northeast Snowstorm*** February 16-17 2003 (Official Thread)

Moderators, please pull if a similar thread has been started. I did a search on "snow" and blizzard" and came up with nothing.

What originally looked to be primarily a mid-Atlantic snowstorm has blossomed overnight into a monster snowstorm that threatens to shut down the major cities of the Northeast for tomorrow.

Just got the latest forecasts. Washington D.C. area will see 1-2 feet. Philly will see 17-34 inches according to their local mets. NYC will see 1-2 feet. And Southern New England (including Boston), which was originally thought to be missing this storm, is now pegged to get at least 10-20 inches before all is said and done with possible blizzard conditions tomorrow night as the storm explodes ("bombogenisis") off Nantucket island during the day.

Some very impressive snowfall reports already coming in despite the fact that the storm hasn't even developed off the coast yet. Some 8 inches is on the ground in the DC area and snow is falling heavily in the Philly area and parts of New Jersey. This snow is NOT from the storm that is expected to develop off the Carolinas this afternoon, move northeast and "explode" off Nantucket Island during tomorrow.

These storms are never a sure thing until they happen because they are so unpredictable. But this storm has all the ingredients to make it a storm of historic proportions from Washington D.C. to Portland, Maine. If everything falls together just right, we could be looking at 2 feet (or more) of snow in many urban areas of the Northeast over the next 36 hours.

Really! We haven't had any yet here in northwestern Passaic County. Guess I've got something to look forward to. Glad tomorrow's a holiday.

I grew up in Levittown NY! Miss my ol'e Levitt house. Levitt homes in NY are going for 300 now! Can you believe that. My husbands childhood home which is the absolute basic with all original cabinets etc that could go to Smithsonian could get 250 in todays market. Truly stunning!

Could you PLEASE send some of this my way? My biggest snowfall this year has been 3 inches. It is dry as a bone (well, it did RAIN the other day). All I want is 8 inches in one storm; usually that happens once a year, but not this time. Send some of it my way, as it looks like I won't get another shot at snow with it warming up already....:(

Raining cats and dogs here in north central Florida. Temperature has dropped to 65 and there's distant thunder.

My sympathy goes out to all FReepers north of me. As a native New Yorker, I know what you are going thru. I was stuck at my job for three days during the Blizzard of '78 ... that was not fun!

My own Tom Clancy moment:

Abu Al Mohammed and Razi El Rashid moved their truck closer to the target. The snow was a lot heavier than it had been when they left Newark. Abu was having trouble seeing through the winshield, as the wipers couldn't keep pace.

"I can't find the road," he thought, as he tried to steer the truck with its cargo onto the entrance ramp. "We didn't cover this in our training."

Although it was cold in the truck, he began to sweat. Razi looked at him and asked, "What's wrong?"

"If we don't get up this ramp, we cannot get to our destination," Abu answered.

Just then, the wind picked up its howl, and the truck lurched.

"I think we are stuck!" Abu cried. He gunned the engines, but the wheels spun in place.

Jumping from the cab, they saw that drifts had impeded their wheels. They had no shovel, and tried to free the wheels with theier hands.

"It was never this cold at home," Abu thought, remembering the warm winters of Baghdad. "How do these infidels live in such a climate?"

Both men scooped snow in a frenzy, knowing that the President's plane was to touch down in a matter minutes. Their hands were red and numb, but still, they kept shoveling.

The twilight was suddenly lit in colors of red and blue. Patrolman Tim Michaelman of the Virginia Highway Patrol had taken pity on the forlorn figures, struggling to get their truck free.

"Hi, guys! Need some help?" Tim asked. He noticed then the faces of the drivers, and radioed his dispatch for help.

Maybe God sent the storm for a reason. Dog.

We're getting ready to take the kids out to play in the blizzard -- after all, how often do you get one in Virginia? I tried to explain that this snow isn't good for making snowballs or Calvin & Hobbes snowmen, but I'm not sure they believe me.

Wind and snowfall both picking up. Probably more than an inch per hour now.

Just got done shoveling the driveway and walkway, I think it was futile. The wind is blowing quite a bit. I'd say it's at least a foot here, and there's lot's of drifts which measure over 2ft. I cleaned up near the cable box & gas unit on the side of the house, this was all drifts and it was up to my knees. However the snow is dry and light, which makes the shoveling a bit easier but it just blows back at you....
