***Northeast Snowstorm*** February 16-17 2003 (Official Thread)
self | self

Posted on 02/16/2003 8:19:33 AM PST by SamAdams76

Moderators, please pull if a similar thread has been started. I did a search on "snow" and blizzard" and came up with nothing.

What originally looked to be primarily a mid-Atlantic snowstorm has blossomed overnight into a monster snowstorm that threatens to shut down the major cities of the Northeast for tomorrow.

Just got the latest forecasts. Washington D.C. area will see 1-2 feet. Philly will see 17-34 inches according to their local mets. NYC will see 1-2 feet. And Southern New England (including Boston), which was originally thought to be missing this storm, is now pegged to get at least 10-20 inches before all is said and done with possible blizzard conditions tomorrow night as the storm explodes ("bombogenisis") off Nantucket island during the day.

Some very impressive snowfall reports already coming in despite the fact that the storm hasn't even developed off the coast yet. Some 8 inches is on the ground in the DC area and snow is falling heavily in the Philly area and parts of New Jersey. This snow is NOT from the storm that is expected to develop off the Carolinas this afternoon, move northeast and "explode" off Nantucket Island during tomorrow.

These storms are never a sure thing until they happen because they are so unpredictable. But this storm has all the ingredients to make it a storm of historic proportions from Washington D.C. to Portland, Maine. If everything falls together just right, we could be looking at 2 feet (or more) of snow in many urban areas of the Northeast over the next 36 hours.

Please post your local reports here.

You ain't kidding. The wind is just starting to pick up now. With 27 inches of snow the drifts are going to be something to see.

I have a feeling that Long Island is going to get b-slapped by this snow. As if the road needed more rock salt. There are potholes the size of craters in front of my house. Snow in Virginia? You dashed my mom's dreams of sipping icetea on her big house porch enjoying the warm weather. I told her it snows down south!

Ballooning is great fun. Especially if it's the American Flag! People have a very different reaction than with a round balloon.

Fidget gets her way too. Us people are so pathetic.

That is ok. I just checked accuweather, they are calling for us to get another 16 inches of snow before it ends on Tuesday.

They've been pretty spotty so far on their hourly snowfall predictions. We had a guest overnight who thought she could get home to Bowie before the heavy snow started, since accuweather was only showing an inch or two overnight. We woke up with six inches on the ground and more coming fast. She took two hours to get home, and spent the last 10 miles on Rt. 50 following a snow plow...

Still, another 16 inches works for me.

The sun is out and it's almost 6 degrees here in NH. It only got down to 10 below last night. Things are looking up.

At least we don't need someone to shovel so we can make it to the bathroom.

Hi Suzie I am a few miles from you in Scituate. We have had snow on the ground most of the winter. Last week we got 16 inches of snow in one drop. I still have a foot of snow left in the back yard.

Amazingly we havent had a snow-STORM - yet.

We have had snow without the high winds. That may change tomorrow night.

It's one thing to be looking at a big snowfall from the comfort of your home, with a hot cup of coffee in your hand, without the screaming winds. Quite another to have the power knocked out during a Noreaster and be looking out at the snow while wearing your winter cloths inside a cold house.

I'm sure a lot of Freepers are involuntarily offline around DC. -Tom

Snow in Virginia. My first winter down here from NYC we bought a house 15 miles NW of Leesburg in Northern Virginia. Around 1978. First winter: -5 F, 20 mph winds, 3 foot drifts in a drafty ol' house. Sunny South INDEED!!! Tell your mom to stay put!!

I just went out and shoveled the walk. Thank goodness it is only about 12 feet long.

Here is a photo of VOC in the plow truck going down the driveway. It is the start of the driveway anyway. Our driveway is about 1200 feet down a hill through the woods.

It is funny to watch the news here. They are marveling at how light the snow is because it is so cold.

Ick -- conveyor belt ingesting Atlantic moisture sounds bad -- is this going to be like a Nor'easter ??

That is exactly what it is. In fact, this will be a fully formed bombed out storm by tomorrow, possibly including a rare feature in cold-core storms - an "eye-like" feature.

Look for it on IR/Radar signatures. Bet it appears.

We have not had icing in DC, so most should not be having any problems.

In fact, we will get hammered more intensely with the snow since they took the sleet out of the forecast (1" sleet = 0.9" water = about 14" snow at our current temps).

It hasn't started snowing yet here in northwestern NJ. Didn't get any snow Friday night or yesterday either.

We got ice all over the roads, but low snow accumulation (on the order of an inch or so, I reckon) here on Virginia's east coast area...

Well mosey your sorry butt up the penninsula a bit - you can have the snow you want - you can have it all for what I care!!!
