The French agreed, knowing full well what Saddam was up to, in exchange for $3-billion in cash, some oil concessions and a huge contract to purchase France's Mirage F-1 fighter planes. Oh, and one other thing: The Franco-Iraqi Nuclear Co-operation Treaty stipulated that "all persons of Jewish race" be excluded from participating.

Other countries -- the Russians, the Italians, the British, less so the Americans -- also sold arms to Iraq, especially during the Iran-Iraq war . . .

Just to be clear on this point. We, i.e. America, did not sell weapons to Iraq either during or after the Iran-Iraq war.

Chirac identified with the young Hussein, he dreamed of living viariously through the new dictator, delighting in his anti-semitism and dreams of an empire. The New Iraqi Empire would annex all of Kuwait and ultimately Iran. Imagine all that oil controlled by a Franco-Iraqi pact. OPEC's authority would be severly restrained and poor USA would have to bow to the whims of Paris. Should war kill thousands of Isrealis- ce la vie.
