"I regard shooting ability to be the single most important skill a warrior can have."

I think you are right. That said, I am convinced, many months after posting this question and doing a lot of reading, that just in terms of physical conditioning and mental toughness, the SEALS are indeed the baddest. That in and of itself doesn't make one an effective warrior, especially if you can't hit the target. But it is pretty impressive. Thanks for your post.

As a former Marine who has personally known and trained with SEAL's, I'd have to agree with you.

I have nothing but the highest respect for the capabilities of SEAL's, but as you and another poster said, they've got a good PR department.

Wouldn't it depend on the situation. I would think that the regular army would do rather well at the division level because they would have their artillery and armor.

Various military history books say things like: a company of marines can defeat a company of army but a division of army can defeat a division of marines. The army won't generally be used if they can't bring their armor and artillery.

I think a SEAL has the right to tell you - "it is a dumb question"

If I were you (which I'm glad I'm not) - I'd apologize to Travis.

I met SFC Shugart about two weeks before he was killed in Mogadishu. I had just parked my HUMVEE near some sandbags, which were mighty comforting to be around at the Mogadishu Airport. The place was a mortar magnet. Anyway, I had no sooner shut down when a guy about 6'0, wiry and with a look in his eyes that did, in fact, set me aback, walked up. He told me I was parked near the aid station, and if we started taking incoming I'd have to move my vehicle. I said, "no problem".

I have another buddy, a SEAL Team 6 guy, that has the same impact on people. I think it is something in our subconcious...we can recognize predators when we see them.

Yea for the corpsman. My father-in-law is a real deal Iwo Jima Marine and you can bet if he asks me if I'm treating his daughter right I say, "yessir, yessir, 3 bags full sir!" quick as I can. And yet when he met my dad, a navy corpsman, he treated him like a brother.

Can't argue with SEALS, Delta, Rangers, SAS, etc. But I'll throw two in that I haven't seen

USAF Pararescue (PJ's)
The most unsung of them all, Coast Guard Rescue Swimmers.

Sorry, man, kind of an unanswerable question. Do some research on the various SOCOM units, and you'll understand why.

I tend to agree - its a "calling," not everyone has the physical prowess, endurance and the intelligence necessary to work as a special operator in the military. You can train any man to shoot a rifle (look at the marines), but some of what these guys do is innate IMHO. "Predator" is a good word. I'm sure many of these guys don't like everything they do, but they also know that if they don't do it no one else will (or can).

The best are the ones whom you will never read about or see on a recruiting poster or in a movie. Those that go so deep into harms way that even the enemy doesn't survive to tell the tale to the noooooze. Those that do the job and come back home in retirement and live right next door to ya quietly.

The rest are good but you asked about the "best".........Stay Safe !
