Well, we've got thirty days of supplies and I'm far off the beaten path. So far off that I am not bothering with duct tape and plastic sheeting. If it's that bad, I'll give away my stockpile and inhale deeply.

Al-Qaeda is a myth. It is absurd on its face to suppose that al-Qaeda cares more about Saddam Hussein than al-Qaeda. The reality is, we are at war with Saddam Hussein -- he hit us bad on 9/11, and now has the anthrax dagger at our throats -- and al-Qaeda is a convenient proxy bogeyman our leaders use to evade that awful truth. We have been outwitted and out-maneauvered by a Third World thug our leaders told us was "contained" ten years ago, and he can kill millions of us and lay our greatest cities to waste if we attempt to move against him. Bad truth, but it's the truth. Deal with it, everybody.

Not that I'm worried for myself, here in Texas, but if one is going to go through the trouble of duct-taping and plastic sheeting the doors and windows, one would also think to shut off the air going through the air conditioning and heating vents (not to mention fans in the kitchen area) and have some oxygen handy since one's own supply will run out once you've used up what's available in the house.

Trying to prevent contaminated outside air from entering your home is rather pointless without shutting off the heating/cooling and suffering the consequences.

Perhaps it sounds foolish, but I'm telling my family to prepare just in case something awful happens. What's the harm of gathering a few things in a "safe room"?

Canned/dried foods, can opener, water, diapers & other baby needs, blankets, plastic & tape, radio, batteries and flashlights.

But I have one question. I assume one has to turn off the Air/heating system into the room. So, if the window and door are sealed, won't the air run out? What's to be done about this?

Please don't flame me. May seem silly, but it's a serious question.

I use to have a great link, posted by a freeper before my hard drive crash, outlining how to set up a bathroom as a bio/chemical shelter. Including running your shower to take chemicals out of the air. I wonder if there would be enough air coming through the pipes to replinish the oxygen in the room?

Al Qaida is known to plan large-scale simultaneous attacks on dates that have some significance to past actions or events. September 11, 2001 is the mother of all significant events, and I suggest today may be just such a date for an attack against US interests -- it's a Tuesday and the 11th day of the 2nd month. In the mind of a dedicated islamist, it could be a good day to launch the 2nd wave.

I hope I'm totally wrong.

I think the Homeland Security office needs to find a better way to communicate these "series" alerts. I read the internet off and on throughout the day, drive with the radio on, etc. - yet, I didn't hear this "update" to the original alert until this morning. Then I got to thinking. Ok. So we're all prepared. Now if there is an attack, wouldn't it be more "terrific" if it's carried out in the middle of the day? Think about it. Families are separated: parents are at work, kids in school. Separated for days. The terrorists aren't going to drop a dirty bomb at 6:30 p.m. while we're all settled down together for dinner.

To fight or not. That is the question. In this context, I see two basic types of people. Those who understand what is happening and those who don't. Technological diffusion is increasing dramatically such that persons of lesser and lesser means now have access to technologies comamnding greater and greater amounts of energy (and potential to produce entropy). This is the fundamental evolution that is occurring and those who don't understand this are advocating suicide for western civilization. The basic absence of law and order in totalitarian regimes can no longer simply be ignored by the United States because, as a result of diffusion, what happens in these countries now directly affects us here. This was not true in WWII or Vietnam, or even as recently as just before 9/11. This trend only grows worse with time. It is important that people understand this dramatic historic shift, and it's implications for civilized society.

Ergo, I fully support thorough, comprehensive and relentless military action (and a full national mobiliziation to support it) NOW against any and all regimes that have, by their past behavior, shown no interest in maintaining law and order within their respective jurisdictions. Law and order must be established first, then we can worry about the ancillary stuff (such as wealthy folks who hate civlization; i.e. Osama Bin Laden).

This short list would likely include Iraq, Syria, Iran, Cuba, North Korea and perhaps others. This should be done at any cost not exceeding the loss of western civilization itself.
