Catholic church officials on Long Island failed in the past to protect children from sexual abuse by priests and cannot be trusted to protect them now without changes in state law, according to a withering Suffolk County grand jury report to be released this morning.
The 180-page report depicts, sometimes in lurid detail, how the hierarchy of the Diocese of Rockville Centre concealed the alleged criminal behavior of its priests and used "deception and intimidation" in dealing with abuse victims. The report repeatedly points out how avoiding bad publicity was paramount.

"Not one priest in the diocese who knew about these criminal acts reported them to any law enforcement agency," the grand jury report stated in recommending changes to state law that would mandate that priests and other church supervisors report such crimes. Using testimony from victims and internal documents obtained by subpoena, the report finds that abusive priests were transferred from parish to parish despite pastors, other priests and school principals repeatedly asking that the accused clerics be stopped from ministering. In one case, according to the findings, a priest who reported his concerns and helped the victim's mother pursue her complaint had a memo placed in his file from a high-ranking official saying "no serious consideration" would be given to offering the concerned priest another assignment.
Some of you may recall the recent post on the Seminary in Huntington that feeds this diocese. The formation program was changed in the early '80's with great attention to liberalizing the content.
This is, once again, part of the purge that is needed to rid our dioceses of these perverts.

This is the worst report yet. Every other one indicates that there was an attempt at least to clean it up. There are a handful of truly egregeous cases, but overall, the clean-up started long ago.
These guys need to go.

I hope the parishioners are sucessful in having the redacted names being released. Only then can they begin to restore any credibility!

This particular diocese needs to clean up it's seminary, too.
Please, understand, that not every diocese has this level of corruption and collusion. Some of us live in places where there have been less than five allegations in the last 12 years and ALL those men are in prison. The worst of the problems are no means universal. And if you let it effect your faith, it can't be very strong to begin with.

I am in this diocese. I know some of the priests and pastors. I probably even have friends that were abused.
As it stands prior to this report the "faithful" still are in denial. It will be interesting to see the fallout this week.

"Brother" Camping is right. The era of organized churches has ended and the end days are upon us.
God help us all.

But wait, it gets better. The Pope is now trying to intervene on behalf of the Butcher of Baghdad with a "peace" mission.

I am in this diocese. I know some of the priests and pastors. I probably even have friends that were abused. I grew up in the Rockville Centre diocese and moved up to the Albany diocese about 10 years ago. My neighbor on LI left the seminary in the Albany diocese, claiming the diocese was far too liberal. He married and moved to LI, anticipating that the RVC diocese would be more conservative. Guess not!
In case you missed it, here is a very interesting post on the seminary in Huntington.

The Church must be dequeerized, or parents will just have to continue to face the fact that their sons are not safe with priests. The Grand Jury report (on the article link) details disgusting and depraved homosexual behavior on the part of many, many priests. We have a Church, many segments of which are sodomaniacal and a danger to our children. Homosexual evil has infected our Church. Trust with parents has been destroyed and obliterated. No sane Catholic parents I know will let their sons be alone with a Catholic priest - and they're right. Our Church is a blighted shadow of what it should be.

The gates of hell will not prevail!
Believing in the Holy Spirit's guidance and Christ's presence in His Holy Church I thank God for the exposure of whatever is sinful there, regardless of how little or how old it is.

You probably are right...God help us. The Church will go underground though, it won't vanished.
