I'm not a Kathie Lee fan, but she has my sympathies here. I've lost a dog before. It ain't fun.
As for coyotes, if I see one when I'm hunting, it's toast. I hate those things.

I, too, can relate to her grief. Coyotes are around even where I live. I nearly hit one with my car last fall at dusk. I'd floor it and go out of my way to hit those things. Crash. Whoops. I hate it when that happens!
Not that I'm a big fan of those things or anything....

A Bichon Frise against a coyote? My money is on the coyote.

Oh, lighten up, wouldya? It's been a tragic weekend.
Yes indeed. It was a tragic weekend for this astronaut and his family. Note the skin color. Tragedy isn't making me lighten up any on inappropriate and unnecessary racial comments for some reason.

The Saturday morning Fox & Friends crew found this funny. To the disgust of my mother, who emailed them letting them know how disgusted she was at the remark. I didn't hear it so I can't comment directly on it.

If the coyotes live near cities or suburbs, then we should shoot the coyotes with dart guns and take them to a rural area. They'll just come back. It would be better to shoot them dead. Coyotes are EVERYWHERE because they are so darned adaptable. They are not only predators, they are scavengers, and will happily dine out of garbage cans. They will munch on little dogs, and seem to just love kitties.
They run in packs, so, while a large dog might scare one off, a pack of them would make short work of even the biggest, baddest pooch. They often use female coyotes as bait to attrack male dogs to eat.
We'll never be rid of them because they thrive on civilization. A lot of guys I know love to hunt them, and, on balance, I think that's a good thing.

I disagree, but legally speaking it depends on the local laws. Cats are legally allowed to run free where I live.
And as for killing birds, they mostly kill birds that are already sick or aren't the sharpest tools in the shed to begin with. If it weren't for cats, the bird population would quickly devolve into a bunch of half-blind, slow-reflexed housepets. I feed birds by scattering seed in my driveway everyday. I've got two cats (three until recently) and find around 2 dead birds per year in my yard (versus several dozen who feed there daily). Larger birds gobble up a lot more songbirds than cats do.
Other "fauna" killed by cats is pretty much limited to mice, rats, and the occasional squirrel. Many people regard all of these as pests, and resort to human methods of trying to wipe them out.

Buy a shotgun and your coyote problems will go away! Or a .22 rimfire. My uncle bought one solely for turkey season. Coyotes scared turkeys he was calling in. He wondered why the turkeys just took off. He then saw a coyote go after it, and it was out of shotgun range.
I thought I saw two when I was hunting a year and a half ago. It was dark and 2 sets of eyes about 40 feet away were staring me down. I couldn't tell what animals they were though. I had my rifle pointed at them. If I knew for a fact they were coyotes....BOOM!. I needed to know my target though.

".. that's a coyote appetizer."
Coyote canape!
We have that many 'yotes in our county. Come to think of it, Maricopa County is larger than Ct.

No Kathie Lee fan; but this is a very sad story nonetheless. Thought Florida was bad enough, worring about alligators. . .and coastal Georgia. . .South Carolina. . .
But coyotes? . . .Thank your closest animal rights activist. . .or PETA neighbor. . .

Kathie Lee Gifford is grieving for her beloved dog, Chardonnay, who was killed near the familys Connecticut home by a coyote who pounced on the petite pooch. Ya know if Kathie Lee had possesed a firearm this could have been prevented.

(The question is not whether you're paranoid, but whether you're paranoid enough.)

What kind of neighbors wouldn't allow traps?
Gee, the Peta types. The Siera Club types. The ALF and ELF types. The anti-hunting types. The anti-trapping types. The gun control types. Basically any type that leans left of center and doesn't realize that an over population of these critters is a personal threat to them.
I'm sure that KLG was against trapping or killing of them until she saw a direct threat to her home. When it is just other people's problem, those people shouldn't be allowed to take care of the problem. This was most pronounced when such problems were just in "flyover country" or way out west.

Correct! I'm in south Texas and coyotes "run" the creek(150 yards east) every year between November and March looking for Bambi(also around). Our big dogs(2) are smart enough to "wake us up" if they get too close....and they've heard two smaller ones get "eaten" at a distance when the smaller ones foolishly tried to chase the coyotes down the creek... We even leave lights on outside during these months as these critters(coyotes) KNOW that they are targets in Texas and avoid yards with lights(unless they're starving or rabid). Our coyotes travel in packs of 3 to 20+. They don't like firearms' sounds...
Is this a good reason for a nightvision scope?

They're quite interesting. The ones out in Apache Junction were scrawny little things. That was when there weren't too many people out there. I imagine they get fed better these days.
The ones I see out on the reservation south of Phoenix are big, fluffy ones-very well fed. I can't help but wonder if they might also have some German Shepherd blood in them.

I know how Kathy Lee Gifford feels. I lost my cute little Dachund,Yorky mix, (Not real sure of the breed)Missy, on Wednesday night.
My husband had taken her and our other dog to the groomers that morning. She looked so cute with pink bows in her ears. She seemed all right until after her dinner. Usually she comes as soon as I sit down at the computer table to get her dog chew. She wasn't as excited to get it but took it anyway.
Later I heard her making sounds like she was throwing up. I put her outside for a few minutes. Looked out and saw her lying on the wet patio. When I opened the door she got up and came in, but laid down just inside the door. I said to my husband I don't think she is feeling well. I picked her up and put her on my husbands lap.
She laid there awhile and then got down and went to squeeze between the stero speaker and wall, which she does on occasion. She then left there and got under the computer table where I was. About 9:30 I called both dogs for night, night potty. She never came. I came over to the computer table and called her loud. She didn't move. I banged on the floor. She didn't move. I hollered at my husband, Missy is gone. I don't know what happened. Heart Attack or what. I miss her a lot and so does our other little dog.

I'd floor it and go out of my way to hit those things. Bad idea. I ran over a cat once going about 60MPH (my car, not the cat) and nearly lost control of the car. It felt as if I had run over a rock. I must have run over the head. Back off, cat lovers. It was an accident. The stupid puddy darted out into the path of my car.
It really startled my because I had run over quail, dove, and rabbit in the past and never felt a thing. I imagine hitting a coyote could do some serious damage to your car.
