ships don't just blow up in re-entry... I smell sabotage...
just my two cents.

Apparently you folks have significantly less regard for these seven souls than I. Not at all. They were explorers and heroes. They readily accepted the risks. I hold them all (all astronauts) in high esteem and am in awe of their enthusiam for manned exploration of space. It's a dangerous profession.
But suggesting we all cover our heads and end manned space flights (or never should have started) because there is a risk involved is plain stupid. America wasn't built on that spirit and these brave souls of Columbia, if they could speak to us, would unanimously disagree with your thinking.

I wouldn't insult our men in uniform by referring to them as "the fist of Allah."!!!

Oh, agreed..
My feelings on the matter assume that the risks are undertaken voluntarily.
As is currently the case.

coming from people who are within two to four weeks of being suckerpunched by the Fist of Allah, in the form of the US Armed Forces. Isn't it remarkable that the defeat of Saddam in '92 and the utterly devastating rain of fire in Afghanistan was never characterized by the sand-maggots as "punishment from Allah"?
(He must have had the day off...)

Palestine is pronounced Pal-uh-steen here in TX. >>>>>>>
Yes, I know......I'm only 5 miles away...
Some seem to be taking offense that debis is being found here....

I'm trying to vidcap that video but FoxNews REFUSES to show it again.Call 'em and ask it be refed on FNC. 212-301-3000.
If they won't do it, call Fox News Edge, their newsfeed service for affiliates (888-FOX-EDGE/212-301-3444), and ask them to refeed it, then call your local Fox station, ask for the engineer and beg him to tape the feed for you.

and these brave souls of Columbia, if they could speak to us, would unanimously disagree with your thinking. Not only did they accept the risks, but they knew the risks better than any of us here (unless there are some astronaut lurkers out there). I echo your sentiments with fervor.

For the numerology loons amongst us, please note that today's date in scientific notation is 03-02-01.

this means SO MUCH coming from people who are within two to four weeks of being suckerpunched by the Fist of Allah, in the form of the US Armed Forces. Fist of Allah? I think they're going to find out that Allah is nothing but a limp wristed false god that isn't going to be there to hear their whining.

LOL. Except that I'm not from Canada.
One thing I'll never understand is when I come across conservatives who advocate limited government and despise the notion of one-world government, yet are so gung-ho about a space program that requires massive government expenditures and now involves foreign nationals flying on missions with U.S. military personnel.

Re: the real time shuttle thread...it is pretty amazing (thanks to the net) that a chain of people, living in different states can all witness an event in sequence like that. This kind of tech was a pipe dream when we were little scrubs.
Today I noticed that Nasa and some news organizations put out requests for pictures that the general public might have taken of this event. I'm (only?) 41 and remember when all that was available was the ubiquitous Instamatic camera. It took days to get the film developed. Now we can just capture an image and send in anywhere in minutes.
Occasionally I stop taking things for granted long enough to marvel at them. </dorky rambling>
To: Terriergal
Why tinfoil-hat it given the enormous amount that can go wrong with these missions? We strap people on top of large amounts of explosives, shoot them into space, and you expect no losses? NASA's track record, given what they do, is amazing. I've bitten my nails waiting for another one of these to happen for years. It's not a matter of IF you're going to screw up a few times when you're doing what they're doing, but WHEN, and what you learn from it when you do, is the unfortunate truth of the matter...no one ever said space travel for the faint of heart.

Hey, if they want to pass the Big Government Space Programs to the governments of Texas (Houston), Florida (Cape Canaveral), and Maryland (Goddard Space Flight Center), that's fine with me.

As usual (as of late) MSNBC was the first to break the news of a problem with the Shuttle... After listening to their Breaking news, I switched to CNN and Miles was way behind the curve, just getting some word in his ear, that he was not really believing.
CNN did catch up and provide the first and excellent visual of the multiple trails of the parts of the shuttle. Then they continued with excellent technical information.
The 16 minute point where they lost radar and telemetry, the competer control is supposed to execute the first of the S turns with a 57 degree bank.

Double it. Triple it!!! It's all about National Pride and "What's out there?"
