You should be proud of the fact that you can simply "salute smartly". I haven't the foggiest of how to do it. Nor would I respect you guys by trying. I envy you. Placing your right hand over your heart (and a bow of your head if you choose) is an entirely appropriate substitute for a military salute in such cases.

A robot could take soil samples. No robot could tell you what it felt like to actually *stand on Mars*; no robot could tell that to schoolchildren when it returned. No robot would have *fun* being on Mars.

And the fact that I would jump on a space shuttle tomorrow. I guess I wouldn't stop you ---myself --the claustophobia would get me, I don't even like airplanes so I guess i don't see the thrill. I remember feeling sorry as a kid for the little dogs and monkeys they used to send up in rockets.

without meaning in any way to diminish the/our loss,
or to disrespect the seven who've fallen today,
it intuitively seems that these unlikely reports are physically possible ...

Obviously you'd rather still be in the hut.He probably is...Being from Canada and all.
OUCH!! ;-)

I understand what you're saying, but ONE of them made a very kind statement.
I think it's important that in times such as this, we all share a deep sense of loss and pain. There are always some tacky Bubbas who'd rather stand in the back of a funeral and trade farts; maybe even break into a fist fight.
There are times when we need to honor our mutual loss and national grief. This is one of those times. We need to be in prayer and to respect the gravity of this historical moment, IMO. Our president has set the mood and I will honor him and our lost astronauts by not commenting further.

I remember getting ready to climb to the top of a tree by my house with a garbage bag, planning on parachuting down. Until my FREAKED-OUT mom saw me climbing the tree with the platic bag.

If you look at it like an investment, the return has been pretty small. A liberal "progressive" myth.
Last time I saw it, the list of space tech "spinoffs" was around 5 single-spaced pages

I guess. If someone really wants to go and understands the risks, then more power to them. Still it seems almost boring to sit confined in a small space with several other people for days on end and not be able to get out and walk around when you feel like it.

The difference here is that space flight requires an enormous cost that moving out of a mud hut didn't require.
If exploring for the sake of exploring is a worthwhile endeavor, then maybe we should start digging a hole to China just to see if it can be done.

The Buran that was damaged by the roof collapse was the one that was turned into the restaurant.

"We are happy that it broke up," government employee Abdul Jabbar al-Quraishi said. "God wants to show that his might is greater than the Americans. They have encroached on our country. God is avenging us," he said.As I said in the other thread, this means SO MUCH coming from people who are within two to four weeks of being suckerpunched by the Fist of Allah, in the form of the US Armed Forces.

Sounds like everybody's workday here on Earth, not like space travel, to me. I'd rather be flipping around in zero-g, or hitting a golf ball on the moon, any day.

A liberal "progressive" myth.
I am glad to hear it!
I can only name a few off the top of my head but, admittedly, I haven't investigated it either.
Even if there were no trade off, I still think it's important and, imho it stems from the mandate that God gave to us: "go forth, cover the whole earth and subdue it.."
We were just born to go and see what's on the other side of that hill.

about what ime was that shown? I may have recorded it.Post #1277 on this thread is the first one to mention the video. It was posted at 11:30am.
