OSLO, Norway – Former Illinois Gov. George Ryan, who emptied the state's death row because he found the imposition of capital punishment unfair, is among those nominated for the 2003 Nobel Peace Prize.

The nominating deadline – entries had to be postmarked Friday – brought a flood of last-minute names to the committee charged with selecting the winner of the prestigious award. It is presented on Dec. 10, the anniversary of Swedish creator Alfred Nobel's death in 1896. The winner, announced in mid-October, takes home approximately $1 million.

"There is a lot of mail and many new proposals, but beyond that we have nothing to say," Geir Lundestad, secretary of the secretive five-member awards committee, said Friday.

Hey, if a one-term failure of a president who single-handedly allowed unstable North Korea to get their hands on nuclear weapons can win one, why not Ryan? After all, the award has now been exposed as a total crock.

What a joke the NPP has become.

Want to win a NPP? Be an Ameican politician and condemn America day and night. Just ask the Peanut farmer.

This must be the new Nobel Prize for Warlord Cronyism and Capitulation to Feminazis.

Well then -- he deserves it!

Or you can be a foreign politician and bribe commies and dictators - with American taxpayer dollars.

Maybe. More likely he was merely hoping for a way to keep his a$$ out of prison when the indictments start flying over all the corruption he presided over (and wallowed in) as governor of Illinois.

Won't matter though - when that time comes, all the media will remember is that he is a Republican, and therefore he will have the book thrown at him.

Not that I'm going to be sorry to see that happen, of course.

This is a total travesty. I am from Illinois and this man single handedly destroyed the Republican Organization on this state. Look at the House & Senate in Illinois, now run by the Demorats.

Lets the killers loose and then gets nominated for the NBPP. Bummer.........

The Nation rag praised the RINO George Ryan for his courage. It was just a matter of time before he would be nominated for The Goobers Award...

The fact that he would be nominated was announced January 4, if not before. See link.

Since his impending nomination was announced while he was still in office, does it seem likely that his desire to win the prize influenced his death-penalty clemency decision?

Yes, because (minor point) the impending nomination could have been withdrawn (please don't call my bluff, I'm just guessing); and (major point) Ryan is a crook, even by the standards of my former state Illinois.

Yes, but more importantly, if Ryan didn't grant these people clemency and the moratorium was undone and they got executed, he couldn't be pointed to as having played a major role toward ending capital punishment.

Of course, while Ryan's being officially a Republican would normally be a disadvantage, the fact that he was in practice the Democrat's best friend should more than make up for that.

Another jab at George Bush, no doubt. They made no secret about their politics when they handed it to Jimmah Cahtah, referencing Bush's intention on Iraq. Not surprising since GWB passed on a LOT of chances to stop or slow murderers from frying in Texas. The march goes on here too. SIX in January, TWO more next week...
