Computer Beats World Chess Champ Garry Kasparov in 3rd Game: Man Vs. Machine World Series Tied 1-1

A blunder cost chess legend Garry Kasparov the third game in a series of Man Vs. Machine champiosnhip games with the supercomputer 'Deep Junior.'

'I had a complete blackout,' Kasparov said after the contest. 'Despite Deep Junior having a great team and grandmaster trainers, I had great positions.' [to try and win the game]

After sacrificing a pawn, Kasparov was left nearly crippled as Deep Junior capitalized on the mistake and prevented any possibility of being checkmated.

Seeing few options to win, Kasparov resigned the game.

The six game series is tied at 1 and one half games each. Kasparov won the first game on Sunday, the second on Tuesday was a draw.

Kasparov said he becomed fatigued during games while the computer does not.

Kasparov is rarity for grand masters, relativley old, near the top of his game, and is still sane.

These "man vs. machine" matches are getting old in a hurry. It is only a matter of time before they get pointless, too -- humans will be unable to beat computers in chess.

No, I'm saying given the fate of many previous Grand Masters its a wonder he's still playing at a high level.

I've heard this objection from the last time and he has a point. The computer is fed data from Kasparov's matches about what he does when etc.. but Kasparoz can't get similar data about Big Blue's in-game stratgies.

It may be whining, but it's still true. It's also true that programs run without errors, whereas people overlook things. Machines will eventually beat us at any task that can be broken down into a definable set of allowable possibilities. I suspect it will be some time before we trust machines to define for themselves what is allowable.

If played today, Kasparov would win. If Kasparov was active in Fischer's heydey - Fischer, no contest. Has to do with the advancement in "chess knowledge" over the past quarter century. Don't get me wrong, Kasparov is one of the four best players in history.
