More Than 1,000 Historians Announce National Antiwar Network

CHICAGO, Jan. 23 (AScribe Newswire) -- At the 117th Annual Meeting of the American Historical Association in January, historians from more than forty colleges and universities agreed to form a new national network, "Historians Against the War." A committee was appointed to draft the following statement, which has been circulated for other historians to sign:

We historians call for a halt to the march towards war against Iraq. We are deeply concerned about the needless destruction of human life, the undermining of constitutional government in the U.S., the egregious curtailment of civil liberties and human rights at home and abroad, and the obstruction of world peace for the indefinite future.

Since that meeting, more than one thousand historians, from 250 colleges and universities in 47 states, have endorsed the HAW statement.

Immediate projects for Historians Against the War include creating a nationwide "virtual speakers bureau" to aid the growing antiwar movement, providing accurate scholarly rebuttals to the mendacious historical distortions of the Bush Administration, and reporting on the growing wave of campus activism.

Participants in the meeting and signers of the statement include many of the United States' leading historians, from Harvard, Yale, the University of Michigan, the University of Chicago, the University of Wisconsin, the University of North Carolina, Stanford, the University of California at Berkeley, and UCLA.

Professor Emeritus at Yale University, David Montgomery, a spokesman for Historians Against the War, notes that "What is most noteworthy to me about the signers of the statement is that they represent a very broad cross section of political opinion and styles of historical writing. Long-time activists, people who have done little for decades, and many others who have never been involved can be found among the signers."

A complete list of signers of the Historians Against the War statement is available at http://chnm.gmu.edu/rhr/haw1.htm.

Coverage of the founding meeting is available on the History New Network website at http://hnn.us/articles/1200.html.

The list is here http://chnm.gmu.edu/rhr/haw1.htm But take it with a grain of salt -- the verification process hasn't been exactly diligent. Of two "signers" listed as being affiliated with my alma mater, one is a visiting assistant professor and the other is a woman for whom a campus building was named ... in 1928!

Let me start my own Historians' list. I favor taking out Iraq, and Saddam. Anyone care to join me?

Thanks for suggesting a list for Historians supporting America. Hope you have tenure! And I bet you are one great professor! What is your special area of interest?

I majored in American History at Florida State University, but am not an academic historian.

Can I sign your "Historians in Favor of Opening a Large Can of Whoop Ass on Sadam" list?

Well, now, let's see what we have. Historians study history, right? Anyone who cracks open a history book about the process leading up to World War II will find a discussion of "America First," an anti-war organization lead by (sadly) the esteemed Charles Lindberg.

The war had already begun in both Europe and Asia. The argument of America First was for the US to stay out of it. Their public argument was, essentially, "What has Hitler done to us?" (to paraphrase that renowned historian, Susan Sarandon.)

Historians who ignore history are as dangerous as surgeons who have a shaky knife, or lawyers who are drunk in court. I remind these alleged historians of a comment of one of their own, the late, great Georges Santayana, "Those who ignore their history are condemned to repeat it."

The former anti-war effort which was a minority but quite vocal until December, 1941, was a pistache of passivists, dupes, German-Americans, and Nazi supporters who were hiding behind the banner of passivism. It was strikingly similar to the current anti-war effort in the combination of strange bedfellows.

Hey, come to think of it, isn't it the proper business of historians to comb through history looking for examples that are close to a present circumstance to shed light on it and better understand it? Historians, heal thyselves.

"HAW"? The only appropriate response seems to be, "HAW HAW HAW!"

Maybe they are continuing the work of Lord Haw Haw (the Nazi-"English" equivalent to "Tokio Rose").

History shows tyrants should be dealt with quickly and violently. Nobody really enjoys a war but every generation breeds its new Hitlers and they don't go away through appeasement or neglect.

Those who say violence never solves anything don't know anything about history. The massive violence of all-out war has ended a hell of a lot of trouble throughout history. You can't talk a murdering tyrant out of his mad ambition. The quicker you kill the bastard, the more lives you save.

I think Tennessee's Sgt. Alvin York, a notable soldier of World War I and a devout Christian who hated violence, said it correctly. "I killed to prevent a greater amount of death."

War is profoundly regrettable and absolutely necessary from time to time. This is such a time.

When it comes to personal views, whether an employee of a university or an employee at McDonalds, they should express their views on off hours and network on off hours absent the use of business equipment or work funding.

I don't care if they support my cause or not, when it comes to these guidelines. I'm no more infavor of 98% of the University staff being Conservative than I am having 98% of them be liberals.

You'll note the reference to a network of speakers. Guess who's going to pay for those speakers. It will almost certainly be campus funding.

Seems like they don't like foreign military engagements. DOWNSIDE LEGACY AT TWO DEGREES OF PRESIDENT CLINTON

Washington Post 3/6/99 Nat Hentoff "…Not widely known, however, is that more than 240 American historians have come forth with a call for impeachment -- on different grounds. The new petition declares: "Impeach Bill Clinton for the Right Reasons: Not for Lewinsky, but Rather for the Illegal Bombing of Iraq, Afghanistan and Sudan." This proposed indictment was first circulated during the Jan. 7-10 meeting of the American Historical Association in Washington…. The petition cites a violation of the War Powers Clause of the Constitution (Article I, Section 8). Although Congress "shall have Power to . . . declare War," Clinton only marginally consulted a few of its leaders and did not go through the required stages of meaningful consultation as mandated by the War Powers Resolution of 1973. Also violated, according to these historians, was Executive Order 12.333, Sec. 2-305, which prohibits assassination or conspiracy to assassinate human foreign targets…."

Well don't forget that we were told that MLK Jr. opposes this war from the grave too.

The dead can vote. Why can't they protest or go on strike too?

President Bush's economy may be far worse than ever imagined if one considers the number of dead people who are unemployed at this moment!
