Democrats demand ‘proof’ from Bush

Daschle, Pelosi sharply assail president on eve of State of the Union speech

WASHINGTON, Jan. 27 — On the eve of President Bush’s State of the Union address, congressional Democratic leaders challenged the president to show “proof to the world” that Iraq has weapons of mass destruction.

Jan. 26 — Presidential aides indicate that Bush’s State of the Union address will deal with a growing federal deficit and will require cuts to some programs. NBC’s Joe Johns reports.

IN WHAT WAS billed as a “pre-buttal” to Bush’s address to Congress and the nation Tuesday at 9 p.m. ET, Senate Democratic leader Tom Daschle and Rep. Nancy Pelosi, the party’s leader in the House, sharply criticized Bush for taking what they said was a “hurry-up approach on Iraq” and charged that he was creating a “credibility gap” by saying one thing and doing another across a range of issues.

“If we have proof of nuclear and biological weapons, why don’t we show that proof to the world — as President Kennedy did 40 years ago when he sent Adlai Stevenson to the United Nations to show the world U.S. photographs of offensive missiles in Cuba,” Daschle said at the National Press Club news conference.

“At a time when we have only just begun to fight the war on terror, the American people deserve to hear why we should put hundreds of thousands of American troops at risk, spend perhaps hundreds of billions of dollars, risk our alliances, and inflame our adversaries to attack Iraq,” said Daschle, D-S.D.

CUBAN MISSILE CRISIS CITED

Daschle’s reference to Cuba related to the Cuban missile crisis of four decades ago. At the time, the Kennedy administration unveiled reconnaissance photographs at the United Nations to prove its claim that the Soviet Union had dispatched missiles to an island 90 miles off the United States mainland.

“The state of our union today is anxious,” he said. “The triple threat of war, terrorism and recession are combining to make Americans unsure about their future and unclear about the course our nation is taking.

Pelosi’s criticism of Bush was directed largely at domestic issues, including the president’s proposed elimination of the tax on corporate dividends and his record on the environment.

Well, last week when I asked why the Dems seemed so frantice now, somebody pointed out that when the war starts, they aren't going to be able to criticize Bush like they're doing now; the country ALWAYS supports the president.

They have to get their licks in now.

Does "pre-buttal" mean they make a$$es of themselves before the SOTU address and does rebuttal mean they do it again after?

The Dems know that there is no such proof, so there's no disadvantage to saying this. They know Bush has no ace to lay out.

I really wish President Bush would offer some proof- just to embarass the Dimocrats that have opposed the war up to now!

"Barney calls it fore-buttal"

That must be "rump-ranger" jargon for something.

I would have to go with the pre-buttel is in anticipation of the re-buttel but not limited to a single post-buttel as long as the SOTUA actually has time to be aired. :-)

But not to worry, after the 5th post-post-post-pre-re-buttel, we go to door #3. (Door #3 is presently open for suggestions, ie: cole slaw wrestling)

I don't think Bush will let the real cat out of the bag until the noise from the left is unbearable.

It seems to me it's going to be a slam dunk on them, and they're stepping right in it.

His timing is perfect as usual! Maybe he had better clean out his ears and listen to what Secretary Powell had to say today!

Well either the Rats believe Saddam or they believe The President of the United States

As for me .. I'll back President Bush

I just have one question for The Rats .. what would be enough proof ..

When thousands of men, women and children are murdered because the Democrats didn't have the balls to stand up and deal with Saddam when they had the chance?

I guess the Dems didn't learn a thing from 9/11

I'm going to hate it tomorrow at the SOTU address, if any democrats reach out to try and hug or touch President Bush as he is going down the aisle. I despise them.

If Saddam has enough anthrax to kill 1,000 Americans, and he refuses to obey the UN order to turn it over, should he be forced to?

I know that you used the number 1000 for illustrative purposes, but I believe that I read or saw a report that said that Hussein is believed to have enough bio/chem material to kill every human being on earth two or three times over.

Pelosi was heard to say that she opposed the Iraq war for two reasons.1-They have no WMD. 2-If we attack Iraq, Saddam will attack our troops with WMD.

Help me out here......

Daschle & Pelosi don't care if intelligence sources are compromised; they don't care if operatives and sources die. It doesn't serve their agenda...
