IT'S JUST A GAME 1/27/03 MARK A SITY
Last night Oakland, CA burned. Why? Because their football team lost the Super bowl. This is becoming a regular tradition. Before the game, I asked my wife which town she thought would burn.
What so many have lost sight of is the fact that football is just a game, entertainment; nothing more. However, it has been hyped to the point where fans actually think it is important in their lives. I'm not sure who it was, if it was Marx or one of the early USSR leaders, but he called religion " the opiate of the masses." It seems that in this nation, football has become the opiate of the masses. People get all wound up over this game, use up all their emotion and energy and have none left to worry about important things, like the amount of money they earn that is confiscated by the government, or protesters who insist that we leave ourselves vulnerable to more terrorist attacks by allowing a terrorist regime to continue its search for nuclear materials. Nor do they have the energy to stand up against the eco-nuts who want to take away our freedoms and property. They are too busy getting hyped up for a game, or rioting after the game, or looking forward to the next game.
I am no fan of law suits, but I would support one by the victims of the Oakland riots, citing the football industry. That industry, including the teams, the sports casters, and the promoters all conspire to hype up this game well beyond its true importance. They play on the emotions of the weak, and the minds of the foolish; making them think that the outcome of a game played by millionaires is actually important to their lives. Many of these millionaires are little more than arrogant thugs. Since these millionaires are worshiped by their adoring fans, they are allowed to continue their thuggish behavior even to the point of literally getting away with murder (OJ). The sheeple are led around by the nose by the promoters to pay huge sums of money to support the industry and the thuggish players. Not all the players of course are thuggish or criminal, but there are enough to make the case that these people should not be role models for our young.
The hype and rioting didn't start with football. I first noticed excessive hype as a child when pro wrestling was on in my Uncle and Aunt's house. I found it so offensive at the time that I became sensitized to hype. Football has gotten to the point where pro wrestling was in those days. I shudder to think what pro wrestling has become. Hype has even been introduced into the game of golf, one of the most boring games in the world to watch. Rioting over the result of a game actually started with Soccer in Europe and South America. I suspect that high levels of hype were involved in its promotion.
Next year for the Super Bowl, I think that there should be a pool not on who wins, but rather on which town burns that night. It would make for a more interesting bet, since it is not always the loosing town that riots.

Its hopelessness because no one cares...they let their little cities burn until they get tired and then go pour water on the fire. Like I said, they destroy their own crap. The riot is caused by people who want to burn pillage and steal which is from hopelessness. If you have hope, then you dont need to pillage and steal...
I saw the Super Bowl yesterday and wasn't sure if I tuned into a rock concert or a football game. I mean, they had Santana just before the game, the artists you mentioned at halftime and then a washed-up Bon Jovi after the game. They actually had John Gruden and the Buccaneers cooling their heels after the game so that Bon Jovi could finish their first set before being presented with the Vince Lombardi Trophy. Unbelievable!
It does seem that the fans care more about the outcome of the game then even the players themselves. After the game, the Raiders players were smiling and congratulating the Buccaneers. I'm sure the Raiders were disappointed they didn't win but it didn't ruin their lives or anything. They are still going to get a nice payday out of it, win or lose. Evidently some of the Oakland fans have such empty lives that this loss has given them nothing to live for. Very sad.
Uh-huh...blame the football industry for the rioting! That kind of logic fits with blaming firearms for murders; blaming the fast-food industry for fat folks; blaming alcohol industry for DUI fatalities on the highway; blaming God for life's inequities...
All depends on your perspective...;-)
So let's sue Madison Avenue advertising agencies? Better yet, let's sue teachers for producing those weak minds? Let's make every imaginable entity responsible, save the vandalizing hooligans who actually did the damage!
Keep 'em distracted with sports, celebrities, music, and shopping. It's working wonderfully, isn't it?
Agreed! Maybe we should all blame the government public schools for turning out such morons as these rioters.
