Britain like 'a coiled spring'
January 24 2003 at 01:38PM
London - British society is "like a coiled spring" over the issue of asylum seekers, said Home Secretary David Blunkett on Friday, adding that he is worried about people "taking the law into their own hands".
Blunkett's comments, published in the left-wing weekly New Statesman, came as a racist party took a local authority seat - its fifth so far - in a by-election in northern England.
"I'm worried about tension and frustration spilling over into the disintegration of community relations and social cohesion. I'm worried about people taking the law into their own hands," said Blunkett.
Concerns over the number of people seeking asylum in Britain have been running high for years, but revelations that north Africans linked to terror plots have entered the country as asylum seekers have exacerbated feelings among the nationals.
They were continuing to question four men of north African origin "We are as a society like a coiled spring. We are undoubtedly prepared to display anger in different ways. People in some cultures do a lot of shouting, but let it out. We display much more anger from within," he said.
On Thursday, the Home Office announced it would seek to extend for another year special powers allowing the indefinite detention of foreign terrorist suspects if it was unable to deport them.
There are currently 13 people, most of them thought to be north Africans, detained under the provisions, which expire March 14.
Police said they were continuing to question four men of north African origin under terrorist laws in connection with the discovery of the deadly poision ricin in a north-east London flat on January 5.
The men were among those arrested at a north London mosque on Monday morning.
Four Algerian men arrested in connection with the original raid have been charged under terrorism laws and have appeared in court.
Late on Thursday, Adrian Marsden, 42, a father of seven, was elected councillor in a West Yorkshire ward as a member of the overtly racist British National Party after the party had flooded the ward with activists.
Marsden overturned a previous Labour majority in a closely contested race with a turn out under four percent.
Britain is estimated to have about five asylum seekers per 1 000 in a total population of almost 60 million.
Of particular concern to the authorities are the about 9 000 Algerians who are reported to have come to Britain since civil war erupted in 1992.
About 1 000 have received refugee status, but the remainder are thought to be still in the country, either awaiting legal proceedings or living there illegally. - Sapa-DPA

This is what we like to call BACKLASH. Hopefully, we'll start seeing more of this in Britian, and here in the US. Heck, France might even decide they've had enough someday. Naaaaaaa. They'll just give up.

It seems to me that multi-culturism invariably leads to vigilante-type violence, e.g., Kosovo, Bosnia, Israel/Palestine, while the most peaceful societies are homogeneous ones: Japan, England (before the 60's), Sweden, etc.

The UK is thickly settled. Why the heck would they let a band of troublemakers in? What's the upside? I say this despite the fact that some Algerians, some Muslims are OK.
Who needs the possible/probable headache? Let the Muslims "act out" their problems in their numerous Islamic nations.

That's not true. Hunting rifles abound in England, and archery equipment isn't kept track of at all.

I know even slingshots and swords (except for blunt decorative ones) are illegal there. I know someone (via internet) who almost got busted for importing a slingshot inadvertently. What are all the current laws there? I was thinking that even hunting rifles were now confined to storage at liscensed shooting clubs. Or am I confusing proposed English laws with existing ones? Not a lot of coverage about it here.

It's just handguns that are banned. Sadly.

And what, the activists were allowed to vote?
Obviously the feelings of the voters in that ward are of no account. Racists the lot of them!

You know, when Powell speaks of the," difficult decisions ahead..", when Frist says,".....the grave situation...", it is not hyperbole.
It IS coming, and it won't be just a carbomb, or some jihad with an explosive vest.

into the disintegration of community relations and social cohesion Imagine that! Who would have thought that unlimited immigration from third world countries that regard flush toilets as bleeding edge technology could possibly be a problem? My, my! (/intense sarcasm)

France has thei share of Algerians and they long ago had their backlash to Muslims. They simply restricted entry and raised the bar on immigration. France's borders are also alot easier to monitor.
The backlash has been playing for several years all around Europe. Germany, Norway, especially Denmark. Now the Netherlands is in the same state as Britain.
