January 24, 2003 -- WASHINGTON - In a sharp rebuke aimed at France and Germany, Secretary of State Colin Powell yesterday lashed out at countries that want to duck a showdown with Iraq, saying America will have plenty of friends in the foxhole without them.

These fair weather friends haven't paid a nickel back to the US for saving them from fascism, the Marshall Plan, etc., etc. If the phrase, "old Europe," stings a little, then perhaps some frank speaking was overdue.

We need a Dept. of Insults.
I nominate that we hire Don Rickles and give him a new Cabinet-level post!

Uh .. Michael, in case you didn't notice, that was not a real news story. Rumsfeld never called Germany and France an "Axis of Weasels".
The first I saw of that, it was here on FreeRepublic.

It's been over 200 years since the French were of any help to us, so we shouldn't expect any now! Besides, their small impotent army is busy hiding in their wine cellars.
To: GVgirl
While the governments of France & Germany are behaving disgustingly on Iraq, it'd be a good idea to limit our barbs to those governments & the leftist elements responsible instead of condemning the entire country.
There are undoubtedly good people from those places who visit this board & we should encourage, not alienate them.

Excuse me folks, but the real burr under Powell's saddle seems to me, is that the French have made him look foolish. I tend to agree. Unlike many on this forum, I respect Sec. Powell and his opinions that are often counter to mine. In this case he went out on a limb that our allies would ultimately do the right thing, and at least two seem to have publicly embarassed him. And now he's ticked.

If you're not with us... you're with the terrorists. Seems like this should really apply to our "friends" as well.

Poland, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Estonia, Latvia, Romania and Bulgaria also are supportive. It speaks volumes that these nations, which have far stronger economic ties with the Axis of Weasels, are lining up with the U.S.
The people there know which nation supported their liberation from Communism and which nations preferred "peaceful coexistence" (Brandt and DeGaulle).

We don't need another Federal Agency staffed with liberals.
Freepers are the best and most potent Way of Reality Checks for Clymers. We can do it very well with zero tax $'s being wasted.
We can start this boycott of France and Germany and fill in the other members of the Axis of Whining Weasels as they chose the side of evil.
$crew them with our $'s!

I think we need a Department of Insults. Nyaa, that's just another damned government program. The private sector can handle this. In fact, we can handle it right here on Free Republic, at no cost to the taxpayers. |

If it wasn't for us: The Canadians would be speaking French exclusively; The French would be speaking German; The Germans would be speaking Russian; The Russians would be speaking Chinese and the Chinese would be speaking Japanese. Annnnd if it weren't for our good will, the Japanese would be speaking American instead of just thinking American. Annnnd if it weren't for our influence the Egyptian, Jordanians and Syrians would all be speaking Hebrew. The sun never sets on the empire of liberty and every dirt peasant who happily says whatever he pleases about America in his own language, better pray and thank Almighty God for it.
