It doesn't say as much, but what I'm wondering, could this have been an exercise to show the kids what it was like to be Jewish in the Nazi era? Perhaps the adults, being stronger and in charge,were illustrating what it must have been like to be hunted and imprisoned. It could have been quite frightening for the kids.
