University of California-Berkeley Backs Down on Censoring Emma Goldman Anti-War Quotes

BERKELEY, Calif. (AP) - Officials at the University of California-Berkeley have backed down from a decision to censor the words of Emma Goldman, a fiery activist deported to Russia for her anti-war politics.

Goldman's words stirred new controversy this month when an official at the University of California-Berkeley censored some of her quotes from a fund-raising letter sent out by the Emma Goldman Papers Project, a campus archive.

In an e-mail sent to the campus community over the weekend, Berkeley Chancellor Bob Berdahl said the center can use whatever Goldman quotes it wants in the future.

Berdahl said he does not think that a supervisor editing a fund-raising letter amounts to an abridgment of free speech. However, he said deleting the quotes was an "error in judgment."

One quote from 1915, before the United States had entered World War I, exhorted people "not yet overcome by war madness to raise their voice of protest, to call attention of the people to the crime and outrage which are about to be perpetrated on them."

University officials had said the quotes were removed out of concern they expressed a political point of view and might imply the university opposes a possible war with Iraq.

In response, project director Candace Falk put out an uncensored letter at her own expense.

On Wednesday, Falk hailed Berdahl's decision.

"There was a kind of small victory for everyone who cares about free expression and the right to speak openly, especially at a public university," she said.

Goldman, who died in 1940, was among a vocal anti-war group who advocated for socialist reforms, organized labor, sexual freedoms, atheism and anarchy.

Deported to Russia with several other opponents of U.S. involvement in World War I, she was played by Maureen Stapleton in the 1981 film "Reds."

They actually considered it? Pretty unusual for Berkeley (or Kalifornia in general).

Emma Goldman, a fiery activist deported to Russia for her anti-war politics.

They should deport everybody in Berkeley for their anti-war politics.
