Ex-Senate Majority Leader Trent Lott went overboard praising Strom Thurmond at his 100th birthday party and appeared to wish for the good old days of segregation. He later denied that was what he meant but the damage was done and the Democrats leaped to take advantage.
Even so, my advice to the Not-So-Grand Party was, "Be careful what you wish for." Lott has been -- in the opinion of many of his conservative colleagues -- overly accommodating with the Democrats."
Talk about gazing into a crystal ball.
The Democrats now have to deal with Bill Frist, a bright, honest and decent person. And their ploy brought other unexpected repercussions. The old Ku Klux Klan Kleagle Robert Byrd (D-WV) found himself in the spotlight. Byrd, just six months ago, used the N-word multiple times on Fox News. Byrd, in his political springtime, was not only a member of the Klan, but as Kleagle, he received $10 for every new member he recruited into the terrorist organization.
His spokesman, Tom Gavin, when confronted by protesting members of the African-American Republican Leadership Council and the Washington, D.C. Chapter of FreeRepublic.com, told them he wasn't sure whether his boss had helped lynch any African-Americans when the top Senate Democrat was a Klansman.
Then faithful left-winger Dick Gregory started asking why the late Sen. Richard B. Russell's name is attached to the Russell Senate Office Building?
A Georgia Democrat, who in 1969 was elected president pro tempore of the Senate, Russell adamantly opposed civil rights legislation.
Gregory said the one-time Georgia governor who died in 1971 "was a self-proclaimed, unrepentant white supremacist who during his service blocked every anti-lynching bill and significantly weakened or delayed every other civil rights measure considered by the Senate."

This came to me over the Internet:
After the 1993 World Trade Center bombing, which killed six and injured 1,000; President Clinton promised that those responsible would be hunted down and punished.
After the 1995 bombing in Saudi Arabia, which killed five U.S. military personnel; Clinton promised that those responsible would be hunted down and punished.
After the 1996 Khobar Towers bombing in Saudi Arabia, which killed 19and injured 200 U.S. military personnel; Clinton promised that those responsible would be hunted down and punished.
After the 1998 bombing of U.S. embassies in Africa, which killed 224 and injured 5,000; Clinton promised that those responsible would be hunted down and punished.
After the 2000 bombing of the USS Cole, which killed 17 and injured 39 U.S.! sailors; Clinton promised that those responsible would be hunted down and punished.
Maybe if Clinton had kept his promise, an estimated 3,000 people in New York and Washington, D.C. that are now dead would be alive today.
