NEW YORK (AP) --Al Hirschfeld, whose graceful, fluid caricatures captured the essence of performers from Charlie Chaplin to Jerry Seinfeld, died Monday. He was 99.

Hirschfeld's work was collected in several books. "Hirschfeld's New York" featured the Algonquin Round Table on its cover.

Sad ... I was hoping he'd make it to 100.

I saw that. Interesting guy. I used to dream of being a New Yorker cartoonist. RIP Al Hirschfeld. Thanks for the memories. Maybe they'll hide some NINAs on his tombstone.

A brilliant draftsman. He had an uncanny sense of line.

No mention of his left-wing political cartoons from the 1930's - why am I not surprised.

That drawing of the Round Table was the basis of a hilarious scene in an early Simpsons episode.

In 1991, he received a unique tribute from the Postal Service, which for the first time put an artist's name on a booklet of stamps and allowed hidden writing on a stamp -- "NINA," of course.

As a child I'd try to find the NINAs in Hirschfeld's work after church on Sundays, usually in the NYT Magazine (I think). I'd do the same whenever I see his artwork to this day.

RIP Al Hirschfeld. Although he didn't live to see 100, he did survive the Tina Brown years.

Nice piece of work, regardless of his politics (if any).

I'm really sorry to hear this. I have a couple of Hirschfelds in the house. (They belonged to my parents.)

In each of his drawings, Hirschfeld placed the name of his daughter Nina somewhere. If you have one (even a copy of one), look for "NINA" inscribed somewhere. You may have to look hard -- he generally tried to "hide it."
