Robert E. Lee´s Birthday
Which day? January 19
Earliest Observance? 1889
Demographic Practice? [official?]Southern States
General Robert E. Lee's birthday is recognized by the Southern States. During the Civil War, his brilliance as a leader was well recognized but despite his leadership qualities, the overwhelming industrial base proved too difficult to overcome. He was a graduate of West Point and he first made a name for himself in the Mexican War. He also commanded the attack at Harper's Ferry.
He was neither a slave advocate nor a slave owner. He was; however, a southern loyalist, dedicated to his home state of Virginia. Following the war, he became the President of a small newly reopened University [Washington and Lee University, which now has a number of transcriptions of Lee's letters online] in Lexington, Virginia.

Feel free to post any public ceremonies celebrating Lee's birthday that you know about, especially outside the former Confederate states.

For those who don't know.
On the South of Wash. D.C. on the bluffs of Virginia sets Mr. Lees Home. It has the most beautiful of all views of Washington. It is surounded by the better known Arlington Cemetary. On any visit to D.C. if you go to see Americas heros go to Arlington and see the home. It's free to visit but it costs you your life or home to live there.

We, here, at FR all know the Robert E. Lee is no longer alive. My father is no longer alive. Do you suggest I give up noting the day of his birth each year when it occurs?

I will NEVER acknowledge mlk day. I think that declaring a National Holiday for the man is stupid; but like others, there is good and bad about him. It is better that we should remember the good. During the continuing debates about "afirmative action," it is well to remember that one of King's most enduring quotes suggested that we should judge men by the content of their character rather than the color of their skin. I think most of us here would wish for another like him rather than the Jacksons, Sharptons, and "Enfume's" who now claim his legacy.

In the past I was married to Robert E. Lee and he's dead too. He was a great-grand nephew of the General and actually looked somewhat like him. REL was a real gentleman and a real hero.

I will hang out my Bonnie Blue and my First National this weekend. In Virginia we also celebrate the birthday of the splendid Stonewall Jackson on January 21 (though, since he was born about midnight, there seems to be some dispute about the date).

One has to wonder why you posted this inanity. I knew as soon as I did that some idjit would get his/her feathers ruffled.
It was a joke son. Sheesh.

I knew as soon as I did that some idjit would get his/her feathers ruffled. I'm sorry that we cannot all be as intelligent as you obviously are. Maybe you would find better company at sci.rockets, and just leave us alone to wallow in our collective ignorance?

PS And take your stupid graphics along with you.

I will celebrate his birthday with a glass of top-shelf bourbon and a good smoke on a Charleston porch (with snow on the ground outside). :( Happy Birthday General.
