A robber made a bad decision when he chose to hold up the 7-Eleven store at 29th and Willamette Street early Tuesday.
He didn't know that the clerk behind the counter was armed with a metal baseball bat and ready for anything.
The 20-year-old clerk foiled a similar attempt last May and ended up with stab wounds to his arms.
In the latest case, it was the robber who went to the hospital with injuries.
William Deland Kelly, 48, a transient, entered the store shortly after 2 a.m. Tuesday, Eugene police said.
He walked up to the cash register where the clerk stood and showed a pistol tucked in the waistband of his pants, police said.
He threatened to shoot the clerk unless he handed over all the money in the register, police said.
The clerk told the robber that he couldn't open the register without ringing up a purchase, police said, so the robber handed him a screwdriver and told him to pry it open.
Instead, the clerk pulled out the metal baseball bat he has kept under the counter since the last robbery, police spokeswoman Kerry Delf said. He hit Kelly several times and held the man down when he tried to run from the store, she said.
Police were called at 2:14 a.m. and arrived shortly thereafter to find the clerk still holding the robber, Delf said.
Kelly was treated at Sacred Heart Medical Center and later taken to the Lane County Jail on a charge of first-degree robbery, on a warrant for violating parole in a past drug case and for being a fugitive wanted in another state, jail records showed.
The weapon he carried was an air pistol designed to look like a high-powered handgun, police said.
In the May case, the clerk was stocking shelves when a man walked into the same store at 2895 Willamette and held up another employee working the register. The intruder was armed with a knife and what appeared to be a rifle equipped with a scope.
As the robber left with his loot, the clerk jumped him from behind, knocked the gun from his hand and wrestled him to the asphalt. The robber stabbed at his arm several times before police arrived.
The clerk was treated for the stab wounds, one of which required stitches. The scoped rifle turned out to be a BB gun crafted to resemble a firearm.
Police generally advise against such heroics, recommending instead that robbery victims and witnesses make careful mental notes to help investigators identify and capture people after the fact.

I did ome checking with my sources at another 7 Eleven franchise store then this one, and learned this kid was not let go for his brinksmanship with the robber.
I'll have to think on this situation in the context of today's society, because if I were the store owner I would fire him. Maybe it is me who is using outmoded thinking here. But even if I were in that situation and did that, I wouldn't blight him with a bad reference.
I have no love for armed robbers, that's for certain.
It's the new, service economy.
A person I worked with had his daughter shot dead under those circumstance. They found this out after the fact from the murderers.
She came to put groceries in here car and the two perps were breaking into and stealing a car near her. When the perps were ready to leave one of them noticed she had been watching them so he fired one shot to her heart to avoid any witnesses. At least that is what the perps told the police after the fact when they got arrested.

Kudos to this fella for being willing to protect the store. He's not even the store owner, but he knows what is the right thing to do. Maybe the word will now go out to the neighborhood n'er-do-wells; pick on another store!!
