Sorry for the vanity folks but the web has not the information I need... Since the decline of jobs in KC MO I am forced to look else were for employment hence the reason for the vanity.

Some background I grew up in NJ and when I enlisted in the Marine Corps (28 years ago) I left the state and returned once 26 years ago haven't been back since. I have been doing searches on the Ft Dix area and my question is if any Freepers in the area can give me an idea on cost of living & taxes it would be greatly appreciated.

The other question is if I take said job (C.O.L & taxes within an acceptable range) Can anyone point to an area to live.

Some place where even though I have weapons I won't have to use them on a daily basis.

I live and work in NYC, but a close friend of mine in North Jersey just emailed me moaning about the taxes/fees she has to pay at every turn. And the Dem governor is not likely to be lowering costs any time soon. Wish I had better news.

I don't know that much about the subject, other than the fact that car insurance in New Jersey is the costliest in the country, so you might want to be sure to get a quick quote from a broker in the area and factor that into your C.O.L...

I know this sounds crazy but, perhaps you might fare better here by providing folks with some professional objectives and work experience? OR are you simply asking for what parts of the country have low COL?

On the other hand, gasoline taxes in Jersey are fairly low, so despite the fact that there are no self-service stations by law, the price of gas is pretty low...

The closer one is to the NYC area the higher the COL in NJ unless one lives in an urban envirornment which has its own problems. If one has firearms one would be advised to completely check out the NJ law regarding firearms. Taxes are expected to increase in NJ and as it is now the cost of real estate in some counties is about as high as it is possible to imagine 525,000 for a three bedromm raised ranch under 2500 sq feet in Paramus.

I am in IT (UNIX sysadm) I just spent 6 months in NM and the contract ended, so I am back in MO (the job I am looking at is at Ft Dix Gov-contract long term)The KC area for jobs creates a vaccumm (it sucks) you can't even buy a job here.

My problem is I will do what ever I have to but I can't fathom going back to NJ.

Get yourself to SEATTLE! Even if you have to spend your last dime getting here. Don't believe any of the bad economy rumors. It's all baloney. We're flush with jobs here! If you have software skills, focus on those. C'mon in, the water's warm, bro!

Seriously, we just made a job move as well. What we learned in that process (granted, anectodal) was interesting. We spoke to the cross-country moving companies, insurers, realtors, etc. What we learned from the trends these people were seeing is that there has been an exodus over the last year or so to the following states: TX, CO, and FL. Notice the common denominator? All lower taxes, business-friendly, and run by conservative governors. There are places in these states that are emerging (future looks good, land/housing prices still reasonable, services are cheaper, and local government is working hard to attract new business). Granted, there aren't as many jobs in some of these smaller markets (outside of Dallas, Miami, etc.), so you may have to commute a bit - at least initially.

As for the job search itself, I'm sure you already know very well how to do your own websurfing, resume updating, making contacts with folks from your past, etc.

New Jersey is a very expensive place to live, but there are some advantages to living here. The economy is so diverse that we never have cases where everything goes in the tank at the same time.

And Morris/Somerset/Hunterdon Counties are among the best places to live in the U.S.

Just browsing through some of the job boards here, there seems to be a good number of Unix based IT jobs up here in Minnesota.

Come join the ranks of the ever growing republican voting base and hopefully soon a Shall Issue CCW state as well.

Taxes are a bit high, but our new Repub Gov signed a pledge to not raise them and to cut spending.

And if you like the outdoors, you can't beat Minnesota's scenery.
